I still think the column of smoke with the mortar ball emerging from the top is a master stroke!

Thanks for that. I can't claim the concept as an original idea but there are several variants on the theme which I have used over the years. At the core of that column is a thin piece of piano wire. I previously used a fast food straw to support a rocket exiting a German WW2 Stuka zu fuss – that looked good.
I originally was inspired by my friend Kevin Calder about 15 years ago who used the idea on an ACW mortar. I don;t know if he dreamed that up himself or acquired it elsewhere.
Anyway, it works and people like it – mission accomplished!

Regardless how old the idea is, it looks fantastic.
