Hello If anyone has the Nafziger Collection's books on The Wars of the (French) Revolution, I would be grateful if you could indicate whether they are worth buying. What I would like to know is whether they are readable and have some decent maps. I am also looking at the various contemporary accounts of battles and campaigns from around 1650 to 1871 available from the Nafziger Collection. Any tips on which to buy and which to avoid would also be appreciated. Thank you |

If you mean specifically the French Rev, then I don't know…but if you mean his volumes on 1812, the 1813 trilogy and the recently published 1814, then for 1812 and 1813 volumes I would characterise the detail as excruciatingly good, and the maps superb and detailed, if not up to the latest graphic standards. Haven't yet read the 1814 volume, but first looks are promising…. |

Thank you, but I already have the 1812, 1813 and 1814 books. I was referring to the books that are available on the Nafziger Collection website, rather than Mr Nafziger's books that have been published by others. |

I wonder now whether a distinction should be drawn between reference and reading. |

The Nafziger FR books are not by George himself. He has only translated the original. One is by Chuquet, the other I can't recall. I have Chuquet on my 'to get list' – not much else on the FR in that detail. |

Thanks baxterj. I was aware of that. What I would like to know is whether the books are useable histories of the wars of the period. For most periods, I generally find more modern accounts to be a lot more user friendly, but there is so little available in English on some of the wars covered by the Nafziger Collection books that I am prepared to give them a go if I can get any sort of positive push. |
