Was the M3 Lee tank phased out by the US Army before the Sicily Invasion? or were there a few still used in combat there? I have seen many Sherman and Stuart pictures in Sicily but as yet not one of the Lee.

All gone by then. It's use by US units was down to lack of Shermans. Once supplies of Shermans were available the Lee was kicked to thw curb. I may be wrong, but I recall only 2AD ever used Lees in the ETO.

Unless you want to go to the Pacific, there is no escaping the M4 once 1943 rolls around.

What they said, post Tunisia its Sherman's until the mightyPershing rolls in, and breaks down….or hits a bridge it can't cross…

And Stuarts, of course.

Of course the M3 Lee makes a brief re-appearance in 1945 at the time of the Rhine Crossings in the form of the CDL (Canal Defense Light) version.

I didn't count light tanks or I would have added my all time favourite US tank the M-24. I fell in love with it in 1960's movies and when the Matchbox kit came out bought loads. However let's admit it also had it's problems, though not as bad as the M-26.

The CDL was a British development so would be M-3 Grant not the Lee. ;-)

Lot's of towing vehicle and ARV versions of the Lee/Grant around after Africa.

Fatman, no, the CDL was also used by the Americans and the ones that they used were modified from the M3 Lee.

The US Army took the Lee to North Africa but gave the few surviving ones to the Free French for training before the US troops when on to fight elsewhere. All the Lees were traded one to one for Shermans. There were many variations of the Lee as CDL ARV and artillery prime movers, but no tanks used by the US Army in Europe.

In the Pacific the US Army used the Lee in the invasion of Makin Atoll while the USMC were invading Tarawa. That was the only combat use of the Lee by the US Army in the Pacific.
