Anyone able to clear up confusion over shabraque and facing colours for the three troops of Lifeguards. Sapherson gives blue for facings and red/ gold for shabraques, Grant gives blue for first troop, green for second and buff for third (for both facings and shabraques). Saphersin gives these colours as hat ribbon colours only. I can't find any contemporary prints which show the three troops, so would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction. |

For my money I'd go with Sapherson. They are all from a single 'regiment' so are most likely to have a common basic colour 'set' but with smaller variations in each troop. |

Dave C.C.P.Lawson 'A History of the British Army' V.1 gives a few descriptions of the Life Guards: Life Guards – 1684 King's Troop – scarlet coats lined blue, velvet carbine belts laced gold & silver. Red housings and holster caps w/ Royal cypher and crown. Queen's Troop – as above w/ green facings, housings and holster caps, Green velvet carbine belts laced gold. Duke's Troop – Same as above w/ yellow facings, etc. Carbine belts laced silver. A few extra uniform notes: From the time of the Coronation of James II: Hat ribbons of the three Troops were blue, green and yellow. c.1699 – coat lace changed to gold only. Cliff |

@ Camcleod. This sounds like the detail Grant gives. It may be that JamesII Lifeguard did have different colours to that of William. As I am doing both sides for the Boyne, I may well do three troops as you describe for the Jacobite army and three with blue facings for William's. Thanks fellas. |
