We recently did a big game and it's a good case in point link
a) We used 'Imperial' – ie we used the 15mm measurements and play sheets, it's just that – every time it said 'Centimetres' we said 'inches' link
So Infantry don't move 8cm they move 8". Close range isn't 30cm it's 30" etc etc.
b) if you are using detachments then the first is lead by a Lt (his Leadership value plus 2d6), the second by a captain (his Leadership value plus 2d6) and the third a major and so on. Exceptions to this, by the way, might involve special leaders who come in with smaller units (it'll say that on the detachment sheet).
If you are using smaller units then a half sized unit is a troop – 4TUs for Elites, 5TUs for veterans, 8TUs for Trained and 15TUs for untrained. Depending n the sort of game you want to play, we generally give each troop a sergeant to lead them so – leadership wise – each troop gets a sergeant's Leadership value plus 2d6, to two troops – ie one detachment – gets – in effect – two sergeants' Leadership values plus 4d6 in total. It means – however – that each troop could be easier to break via losses and having to take a morale test at 50% (50% losses on 4 or 5 TUs is easier to have happen than 50% losses on 8 or 10 TUs).
It does seem to work out, believe me.
c) If you run big games (like we did in "The Warrior" – the example I gave above) we didn't invoke what is an optional rule of rolling for initiative. The standard is that, if say you had (as we did) 5 forces – two detachments of Slammers with their employers – 3 detachments of Sincanmo versus 2 detachments of Hashemites with their employed mercs: 2 detachments of Broglies versus 4 detachments of Thunderbolts, each force from the five selected their best leader – a Captain for the Slammers, Chief Diabate for the Sincanmo, Major Zeid for the Hashemites, Colonel Chiro for the Thunderbolts and Colonel Broglie for his eponymous force.
When we decided who had won initiative, the entire, multiple detachment force for each commander then bowled their individual, detachment on detachment leadership points and spent them in Leadership pools only within their respective forces.
In smaller games – say two detachments a side or even a few troops a side – we usually roll for individual detachments (or troops) to seek initiative.
For example, in this game I played with Jon Tuffley the other day link my one detachment of New Ukrainians fought three detachments of Solace Regulars and all four detachments bowled individually for initiative (it might have gone him/me/him/him or me/him/him/him or any combination of those as the turns progressed and the three Solace detachments could share their Leadership Points amongst themselves with a pool.
When I lost my Lt when my tank blew up (leadership 6) I went down to a sergeant (leadership 4) and it wasn't as easy to win initiative and I had fewer leadership points to spend when I tried to maneuver and fight. Fortunately this evened out when I blew up his commander Colonel Priamedes (LV10) and he dropped to a sergeant (leadership 2).
That's a long winded explanation: I hope some of it helped!
