Interesting approach to highlighting/washing … it almost looks as if they were washed with white, as opposed to the more usual dark wash.

I'd say they were undercoated white and then washed in the main colour. Effective, whichever way he has done it.

Doh! Dunno why I didn't see that – a base coat of white and a drybrush of the top color is a lot more likely.

*looks* Ah, Zvezda 1/72.

The prime white and wash technique certainly works. I recommend it for samurai, especially when you're talking about the heavily laced armor. Prime white, paint the lacing, wash black.
