link The pilot, I mean. The death toll is horrendous and the pilot didn't die outright. Incredible…. |

As he was apparently still in the plane when it hit, that is indeed incredible. |

Well built those Hunters. |

Well built those Hunters. Terrible event, been a bad year for air shows. |

A bit like Buccaneers, not so much built, as carved from the solid. |

I can't believe the pilot survived flying the plane into the ground. Shame that it happened, especially the casualties on the ground. But I am absolutely shocked that the pilot lived. |

It's all speculation at the moment, of course, but it is my theory that he blacked out in the roll temporarily. I may be proved wrong. |

The aircraft hit nose-up and tail-down, so the front half of the fuselage forward of the firewall broke off and continued on, out of the immediate proximity of the explosion. The pilot seems to have been conscious, judging from the frantic movement of control-surfaces and sound of the engine prior to impact. He appears to have attempted to steer away from the road using left rudder and max thrust just prior to impact. |

Yes, definitely nose up and the front section broke off. The pilot is to be commended for trying to control it but ejection may not have been an option. The seats in a Hunter pre-dated rocket packs used on 0 feet rated seats. |

…been a bad year for air shows It seems like that, especially coming so soon after Kevin Whyman was killed when his Folland Gnat crashed at Carfest, two L-410's collided in Slovakia and a German aerobatics pair collided in Switzerland. However before the Shoreham disaster 'only' 11 flyers had been killed at airshows in Britain since the turn of the century. Britain's worst air show disaster happened in 1952 when a De Havilland 110 jet disintegrated at Farnborough, Hants, killing 31 people. The 1952 incident was also the last time any member of the public was killed at a British air show. |

Why would you ever go to an airshow, after all the accidents over the years?! |
TamsinP | 28 Aug 2015 4:04 a.m. PST |
Supercilious – what about 1980, the Douglas A-26 Invader crash at Biggin Hill Airshow? Seven people (pilot, crew and 3 passengers) killed – do the passengers not count as members of the public? They were attending the airshow and paid to go up for the flight. I was at the airshow that day, so remember the incident. The whole crowd went silent as we saw it going down. |

Why would you ever go to an airshow, after all the accidents over the years?! @ TamsinP – Oddly enough, I originally typed "spectators" and then changed it. I was thinking of people dying on the ground, rather than in the aircraft that went down (whom you would normally expect to become casualties), as the UK record on crowd safety is particularly good. |

"Why would you ever go to an airshow, after all the accidents over the years?!" Won't somebody think of the children…? Why would you ever go on the roads after all the accidents over the years?! Why would you ever go on a train after all the accidents over the years?! Why would you ever cross the road after all the accidents over the years?! Why would you ever use a deep-fat fryer after all the accidents over the years?! Etc… (all of the above have killed FAR more people than airshows) |

The MiG 15 and Jet Provist have been restricted to flypasts under the new rules for vintage jets at airshow's, but I'm hoping for a good day |

Geoff & Jemima (now there's a double-act waiting to happen), I'm typing this whilst sitting under the flight-path for the "Wings & Wheels" show at Dunsfold, where both my wife and I used to work in our BAe days. I'm currently playing a game of "guess that engine" as the various "acts" pass overhead. The last time I saw a JP I was in it! That's not the type of Provost I would have automatically associated you with…… |

I did once go out with an Assistant Provost Marshall (APM aka 'A Police Man')… She was OC Dogs… |
