Think of all the projects you started in 2014-15.
How many of them got shiny new rules, published 2010-15
and how many of them got old rules that came out of your collection or a friends.
Wondering if new rules are inspiring the majority of new projects.

Winston Smith24 Aug 2015 8:18 a.m. PST

I didn't really start any new projects in 2014-5.
Unless you call switching my AWI painting to skirmish rather than brigade level.
And for that, it's trusty TSATF 20th anniversary edition which is 16 years old.
Is that retro enough? grin

whitphoto24 Aug 2015 8:19 a.m. PST

Although I've played miniatures at conventions for quite some time, it's only been the past 3ish years I've been buying my own minis and rules so it's all new stuff for me

Most of the rules I use are @ 10 years old. Is that Retro?

Martin Rapier24 Aug 2015 8:54 a.m. PST

New projects. ummm.

Honestly, I have so much stuff that I rarely need to buy anything new. 2014-15 projects were a bit thin on the ground, however I did:

1. fleshed out my 15mm WW2 ETO and Eastern Front stuff a fair bit. Not inspired by rules but particular scenarios I wanted to do.

2. Rebased (agh!) a fair bit of 6mm stuff, which _was_ inspired by some new rules – 5Core brigade Commander. It was something I'd be meaning to do for a while, but that was the final push.

3. Tarted up some second hand hoplites and Roman auxiliaries. Partly as I had them to do, partly as I 'needed' more stuff for Neil Thomas Ancients and CnC Ancients.

4. Have done a load of 2mm pike blocks to turn my 2mm WSS armies into pike & shot ones for Neil Thomas Pike & Shot rules.

5. Struggled to make 'Battalion Attack' into a fun game rather than a frustrating simulation of the futility of frontal infantry assaults in WW2.

6. Did a couple of brigades of 2mm Bundeswehr for NATO Brigade Commander. Termination of a long-ish term project.

So yes, some rules influence in there, but not huge amounts of 'oof shiny'.

Cosmic Reset24 Aug 2015 9:08 a.m. PST

I think the newest set of rules that I currently use is TSATF Revision 1, published in 1984.

There are a couple of newer sets that I would use if I was doing the convention thing these days, but use old homebrew rules for them instead.

New projects are pretty much restricted to expanding old projects, which only result in new or updated equipment and troop cards for my old (circa 1982) homebrew rules.

Guess I'm a retro guy.

Never use published rules. Always Home Grown rules for all periods.

Weasel24 Aug 2015 9:40 a.m. PST

Bit of a mix. I play a lot of new, bleeding edge stuff but I also play Rogue Trader, Laserburn and ASL.

HistoriFigs24 Aug 2015 9:58 a.m. PST

I think my only truly new project for 2014/2015 is my 25mm ACW project. Figures are Scruby 25mm & rules are Lou Zocchi's Hardtack.

I suppose I could get more retro, if I switched to the older 20mm figures, but I like the 25's so retro enough :-)

Mute Bystander24 Aug 2015 10:11 a.m. PST

No new projects (though new miniatures for old projects galore) but many genres/eras being changed from 25+ mm to 18- mm (18/15/6/3) along the way the last few years. Mostly moving to new rules (Two Hour War Games) along the way.

Does changing miniatures size count as a "new" project?

Great War Ace24 Aug 2015 11:03 a.m. PST

I've always used my (our) "retro" rules. Over 38 years old by now, in one case, and over forty years old in the other case….

steamingdave4724 Aug 2015 11:15 a.m. PST

New projects are usually inspired by book I am reading, film I have seen or friends inviting me to play a particular period. Rules are very much an afterthought and I tend to look for rules where basing is irrelevant or one of the common sizes. I am certainly not inspired to start a new project by "shiny new rules"

vtsaogames24 Aug 2015 11:40 a.m. PST

Lately,
DBA first published 1990?
One Hour Wargames, moderately new
Bloody Big Battles, moderately new

Some old rules that get resuscitated…
Loose Files & American Scramble
Basic Impetus

As usual top of the list is DBA, so retro. 8 new armies completed so far in 2015, don't remember how many in 2014.

Other projects are new shinies: Bolt Action, Super Dungeon Explore, X-Wing.

I don't tie miniatures projects tightly to rules. Separate things.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP24 Aug 2015 2:18 p.m. PST

Maybe one but I'm too lazy to walk over and look at the copyright date of the rules right now.

Mooseworks824 Aug 2015 7:32 p.m. PST

New: One Hour Wargames
Old: TSATF and Song of Blades & Heroes

Green Tiger25 Aug 2015 2:21 a.m. PST

Almost never buy rules so no – all my projects used what I've already got … Or I wrote my own.

Shaun Travers25 Aug 2015 1:35 p.m. PST

I have only started one project (that has been languishing since 1988) and that is 15mm SF skirmish. i was looking at using rules from around that time that I own, but am likely to use FiveCore Skirmish.

Other projects I did this year, or about to do that could be seen as new projects:

Space Figuters – last played in the 80s, played again this year using StarHound rules (from the 80s).
6mm Modern – last played 1981, played again this year using TankWreck (early 200os).
spaceship gaming – last played 2013 using Starfire (1980s version). Likely to play again soon using Quick Start rules from 2012.
Medieval warfare in the channel (cogs) – last played 1981 using Medieval Warfare int he Channel rules (1979). Likely to play this year using streamlined version of those rules.

The only project I bought new figures for was the 6mm modern as i only had some British forces and needed some opponents.

So I do not think my projects align to new rules, nor do the projects necessarily align to the rules that were originally rules. (sometimes yes, sometimes no). I have a feeling I am not really influenced by new rules, although I buy most of them!

Old Contemptibles25 Aug 2015 3:32 p.m. PST

Ten years is not retro unless your eleven years old. I don't buy rules based on when they were published.

Yesthatphil26 Aug 2015 6:45 p.m. PST

2014 – 2015 new projects …

*Ancient – DBA 3
*Dark Age (Yarmuk) DBA 3
*Medieval – DBA 3
*Medieval (Bouvines) – Basic Impetus
*Renaissance – FoG-R
*WWII Naval – Home grown
*WWII Sahariana game – PBI

DBA 3 is shiny and new although I have been using it for quite some time. FoG-R is new to me. Basic Impetus and PBI are played to my revisions although there is a new PBI just published (so I guess that one is retro in that I'm not currently going with the new version) …

you can't get newer than my naval rules as they are still being written (but have been played publicly already so do exist) …

For Ancients, after starting with WRG 5 and progressing to WRG 6 (when they were new) I went through a variety of iterations and ended up back with WRG 6

For Horse and Musket I use "Redcoats & Rebels" and also "Elan Deluxe" both of which are derived from WRG's 1685-1845 rules

For WWI and WWII I use "Command Decision" and have since CDI which was published back in the early 80s. I'm now using the most modern iteration, "Command Decision – test of Battle"

So probably I'm somewhat retro
