I think many gamers are at least a little superstitious. The weekend was our annual two day demonstration wargame at our local Train & Hobby Show. Ligny this year. Needless to say there was a certain amount of mumbling against dice: "cold" dice being discarded for, hopefully, lucky dice etc. I'm not superstitious at all, so I won't mention I, as always, briefly placed my little metal figure of Napoleon on the Prussian backline. At any rate, I was wondering what the chief superstitions are amongst we wargamers. Clearly, I'm in the 'lucky talisman figure' camp. |

1: Don't curse another persons dice by touching them without his permission… 2: Don't look at your buddy who is about to make an important roll and say "Don't roll a 1." |

If you keep rolling bad dice, switching them will only make things worse. |

I usually wear a few days growth of facial hair and,if able, wear one of my 'con t-shirts(Origins,CharCon,HMGS/GL),and remember to breathe. Also, been known to wear a photo keychain with a picture of my wife in it. |

Terrement, that is very true…at least in Sicilian culture and I think other parts of Italy as well. For some reason, the number 17 is their unlucky one. Asked just about every Italian customer I had and never got an answer as to why! |

Newly painted troops die first. My dice are always cold. At one point during a game at a FLGS I asked one of the other players to buy me a half-dozen D6s and wrap them in a handkerchief, which I stuck in my back pocket and didn't remove until I needed to roll. Even brand new dice, insulated from my bad luck juju until the last minute, rolled just as badly as the ones I've used for years. LT |

If I am focused on the "the game" I will roll like crap. If my mind is on something else, and "the game" is only happening because I was committed to others to be there, in other words, "I don't care what happens", then I will roll better than anyone else in the room. Perverse gods of chance and fate. The answer is, of course, "don't care". But that answer means, "why am I doing this stupid game/hobby in the first place?" If doing well means having to not get emotionally involved with the game, why bother?… |

If I game past 2300, I will turn into a pumpkin. It's either that, or I will fall dead asleep about 20 min after taking my amitriptyline … |
