Awoke this morning to check on GW's latest Age of Sigmar releases. I am both massively impressed and also massively depressed, lol. WOW. Amazing new terrain fortresses, astonishing detail. Really neat stuff. Fantastic quality as always, with equally fantastic prices. As I've said, I have their Warhammer Fortress of old, that kit was a full castle with four towers for $99 USD, and the detail of that kit was amazing, and the flexibility of multiple layouts and configurations made it an awesome deal. Just another one of my redundant observations, please pardon me. I am personally glad that my Warhammer armies and terrain are already owned and built and on my shelves. Age of Sigmar is really cool and the stuff they are coming out with is genuinely impressive. But I ain'ta gonna paya no $1,100 USD for a plastic fortress. A fortress that can only be used for chaos, there's no other application for it, it's too specific. Just ain'ta gonna. Here's the latest; link link Their wall expansion set is $100. USD Just for wall extensions. link |
Baranovich | 23 Aug 2015 7:55 a.m. PST |
Now THIS piece I could see getting, I can justify $75 USD for a tower that has this level of detail. But otherwise, daaaaang GW, you're making Age of Sigmar a rich man's game and that's no lie. link |

It might be worth recalling that in the late '80s and into the 1990s, Citadel figures were about the most expensive on the market. There truely is nothing new under the sun. |
John the OFM | 23 Aug 2015 8:29 a.m. PST |
They are astoundingly ugly, and a caricature of everything GW. |
The Beast Rampant | 23 Aug 2015 8:30 a.m. PST |
It's really hard to "scale out" the price on, say, "The Fortress of Grim Corruption" (snicker) , but $100 USD for that wall section is laughable. Maybe half that. Do they not sell individual towers, for those who can't justify a mortgage payment for an ugly plastic toy castle? Or should I even wonder how much that would run me? |
The Beast Rampant | 23 Aug 2015 8:35 a.m. PST |
They are astoundingly ugly, and a caricature of everything GW. I think 'parody' may be more accurate. |
Mooseworks8 | 23 Aug 2015 8:38 a.m. PST |
I like them! That $75 USD keep is very tempting. |
Baranovich | 23 Aug 2015 8:40 a.m. PST |
@The Beast Rampant, Yep, they do offer one of the towers as a single stand-alone piece. $75 USD, I can see paying that for a tower, the detail on it is amazing. That's actually the best piece I've seen for the price so far in all of their AOS releases. The Numinous Occulum is also a pretty impressive piece at $60. USD I could see buying one of those for my AOS battlefields. link link As I've said, with GW it's a matter of getting just a taste of what they offer without completely giving in to "the Warhammer cocaine" of a full-blown GW shopping spree. |
Baranovich | 23 Aug 2015 8:42 a.m. PST |
@Brigadier General, I agree, and as I said above I actually am amazed and impressed at the level of detail GW is achieving in plastics, it is really exciting to see. That $75 USD for the tower/keep is truly not a bad deal, that would be an AWFUL lot of labor if you were to make a tower like that from scratch! For $75 USD I think that price is well justified. |
Baranovich | 23 Aug 2015 8:46 a.m. PST |
Me personally, I'm not a huge of fan of GW's skull overkill, I covered all the skulls on my Realm of Battle Board to make it more natural terrain-looking. I did the same with my Citadel forest terrain pieces, just too many skulls lying about. But I am impressed with the detail in these chaos fortresses, and if skulls belong anywhere, it would be on a chaos fortress. Built with the theme of death to be sure. |
Moonbeast | 23 Aug 2015 8:58 a.m. PST |
I actually like it, having a massive 40K chaos army doesn't help matters much. However, as Baranovich has pointed out, it can only be used for chaos. How many games would I get to use it in before it becomes a tired cliche', and the price is a bit of a whopper for one terrain piece. That said, I've just plonked down $1,200 USD for Infinity terrain that can cover an entire 6'x4' gaming table (and I do mean cover). Call me a hypocrite I guess.;) Edit:Would help if I learned sentence structure… |

They are astoundingly ugly, and a caricature of everything GW. I couldn't agree more. Fire up your computer and follow this mantra: "step and repeat, step and repeat". I wouldn't own one if it were free, I'm afraid. John T |

Yes, both the Realmfort & Fortress of Grim Corruption are highly detailed and apparently huge (thanks HUBcommish)and have a price tag to match. For me, the love ends there. As Baranovich pointed there are just way too many skulls on these like many GW products. I like an ocassional skull here and there to be sure, more if it fits a particular army. I've been known to file off the odd skull I don't like but that doesn't seem feasible here. I wonder if the individually based figs will even stand up on the ramparts easily. I also for the most part see the same few pieces used over again. There is just not that much difference between the two. The add on pieces. Unless I am going to have a "snaking" castle where am I supposed to add on to a round castle? Bottom line: too much for not enough for me. |

HUBCommish | 23 Aug 2015 11:22 a.m. PST |
They do exactly what they're supposed to do, look like a giant castle made of skulls bound with brass. Nobody said Khorne's followers were particularly imaginative! |
YogiBearMinis | 23 Aug 2015 11:30 a.m. PST |
The gate and some walls would be a nice edge-of-the-battlefield piece for sieges and the like. Interestingly, while very expensive, these GW fortress pieces are in some ways similar to the old Mage Knight castle pieces. Those you can get relatively cheap on EBay except for the wall kits, which are almost as expensive as these GW Chaos ones. |

How do the Forces of Chaos build fortresses? You would need some tolerably competent engineers, who on the whole are not fond of chaos. It would be very annoying when the value of Pi kept changing…… Or, maybe it is like a very bad episode of Grand Designs. "We ordered the flanges from Morg'retf but he measured it it flatajs instead of descrats so now we have a two descratft gap between the doors….." JohnG |

Don't you know that GW really needs to make a profit. So you get these types of prices to things that are not worth buying. |

While the Chaos castle is both too rich for my blood and not to my taste, I am tempted by the Numinous Occulum. It looks suitably magical and would work well as the centerpiece for a Frostgrave skirmish. Now, if I can find it at a deep discount I'll buy it, otherwise, no. |

The going to release a special edition Skeletor to go with his skull haven castle? That thing is hideous. Its not even a good evil look. |
YogiBearMinis | 24 Aug 2015 8:37 a.m. PST |
I think many of you are overlooking the fact that the Chaos fortress is available with a smoke machine (GW brand, only $1,200 USD U.S.) that blows suitable-looking atmosphere into your gaming experience. |

I think someone should run a parody kickstarter to reproduce the He-Man Skeletor castle for Age of Sigmar, then see what happens. |
Rogzombie | 26 Aug 2015 1:19 p.m. PST |
GW is like a car lot with many choices, everyone can afford the kias, then you move into the lexus, bmw range and the chaos fort is a Ferrari. I think you can still enjoy the game with the boxed set, no one needs the chaos fortress but there are those who will buy it because they can. I see these guys on kickstarters dropping thousands on one KS and if you look up their record they have been in about a hundred starters. Its probably not necessarily the rich driving this, there are people with credit cards who are very irresponsible. |
