In my efforts to master the General de Brigade set of rules I fought out a small skirmish between some French and some Spanish.

Excellent!!! I too am beginning my foray into these rules and am in the midst of expanding my shako troops to GdB. Being isolated in the a barren wargaming city helps in getting the troops painted. interested in your thoughts on solo play…

Keep it up!

From your AAR, it seems like one of the keys was having the Spanish cavalry positioned such that a rout by the infantry in front caused it to disorder, instead of being able to immediately charge the French.

This is true, and a part of why I wanted to play out this particular scenario. The cavalry needed to be within a certain area to count as supporting, therefore, they were at risk of being unformed. On the other hand, they quickly regrouped and were able to counter attack, though only one unit at a time. Nevertheless, they were able to buy time for the infantry to regroup and get back into the fight. In the end, though, the poor quality of the Spanish was the deciding factor. The inferior Spanish cavalry charged three times, and either lost the melee or couldn't close. The Spanish infantry tried to regain their lost ground, but French counter attacks were successful in driving them back and even routing them.
