I have a question for the masses on TMP. I am doing up a Scottish force using mainly Claymore Casting figures for the HYW period. I started by doing up lots of dismounted MAA and Archers for the Scottish contingent at Vernueil. Now I want to do up a bunch of infantry with long spear for battles on the Island. My question for you is, how long would you make the spears? 50mm feels really short, 100mm is more in the pike range, 75mm is what I was thinking but wanted to see what others would suggest. Thanks Chris |

I've always assumed something in the 12 to 15 foot range. So 50mm is at the bottom end…. |

Silly point, GWA and Janner are all quite right. The Claymore figures are great for rank and file spearmen, but you will struggle to find suitable men-at-arms that you can equip with a spear. In this context the term /man-at--arms' means a fully-armoured soldier – 'knight' in DBA terms and you'll need mounted ones since they did not always serve on foot among the spearmen. The latter should be pretty well-equipped- jacks, helmets, armoured gloves. Do avoid unarmoured types; they are dear to the hearts of figure-makers, but not really suitable for general use – men like that might (but often were not) called out in a sudden crisis. Likewise avoid 'braveheart' types and 'Highland' types – there was no difference between Lowland and Highland troops. On the plus side, any figure – archer/spearman/man-at-arms – that is suitable for an English or French army is fine for a Scottish or Low Countries army too. |
