Hi, I am considering getting into WW2 sea battles but I don't know where to start. 1. What rules would you suggest? 2. What size of minis?
3. What minis would you recommend?

GQ3 – they are easier than they look, but have rules to cover everything you'd want to do at sea. If you want even easier, get the original GQ, though there area few small interpretational issues with the original. |

Before those questions can be answered, you need to refine your interests. First, how much space do you have to play on? Second, are you interested in surface actions, carrier actions, or both? Pacific Theater or Atlantic/Mediterranean? |

What kinds of naval battles do you want? MTBs vs. S-Boats? PT Boats vs. Destroyers and other Japanese, or Axis craft? Destroyer actions? Cruisers? Battleships vs. Battleships? Carrier vs. Carrier/Fleet ops? Submarines vs. Convoys and escort vessels? Narrowing that down a bit first will help, since some are better in different scales than others. |

I would also add how many ships do you want to have in your battles as well. Some rules are excellent for one on one but are overly detailed for many ships. While others are made for fastplay and larger engagements. If you are a little more specific for what you want then it will be easier to suggest a ruleset. There are lots of rules for naval warfare. |

How many ships is a big point – for RN v. Kriegsmarine then General Quarters (I use GQ1 with GQ2 updates, but GQ3 is I'm sure just as good). If you want big battles (Mediterranean fleet actions or Pacific War USN v. IJN) then it might be an idea to look at Battlestations! Battlestations! which is good for big battles (players think in squadrons rather than ships). When I alter model scales I tend to keep the same ground scale as 1:6000 minis give a good feel for the distances involved, but smaller minis can mean a smaller playing area. You could go for Victory at Sea as an entry level. Certainly not the most realistic but good fun to get started. It's easy and I played it with my eight year old to get him started and we had some really fun games. Whatever you go for I'm sure you'll have great fun. Nick |

Also consider Naval Thunder and General Quarters 3. Surface actions with cruisers and larger will play out nicely with both, with a good degree of realism. Game play is not complicated for either, General Quarters will have more to offer for smaller craft, submarines, or aircraft if your tastes broaden with time. Your game table space will influence your choice of scale. If you have 6x4 ft space the 1:2400 or 1:3000 are attractive, but games on the kitchen table get very tight, and lose the maneuverability that is part of naval warfare. The 1:4800 or 1:6000 are more adaptable. |
