Well the surgeon figure must be sold out. Mine lacks him, but does show a lovely illustration of what I am missing.
My worry was that this would add little new to the French Volume and, in truth, the styles prove very similar. There is some very nice figure work, but not everything is to my taste. The horses, especially, can vary, some having a comic book character. Minor quibbles might include the British trumpeter on a Grey or the lack of black fittings on a gun…..the book is, after all, about painting skills
There must be issues with the text. A lack of proof reading by a native English speaker is an obvious omission. There are footnotes entitled "Did you know?" and, to some the response must be….definitely not! Comments about the inferior accuracy but ease of loading of the Baker rifle may (surely….. must) reflect errors in translation.
There is a nice variety of figures, going well beyond "The British Army". You get RN, RM, RA, RHA, a Brunswicker, A KGL Hussar "from Perrys" (well no, actually Front Rank), Portuguese etc. Tartan is superbly done (although the illustration of different styles is hopeless) and we will surely forgive the green hackle on a grenadier. There is short, interesting, feature on changing the technique for 15mm figures….but the emphasis is on God's Own scale…..28mm.
Standing alone, this book is well worth the price. With the surgeon even better………how do I now get him?
Not sure it adds anything to the French volume, in terms of painting technique. Very similar triple layer with progressive dilutions. The tables of rank insignia are useful, but I had hoped for "and now for something completely different"……the use of washes, of inks, of oils on occasion maybe……..
