Just finished 2 British H Class DD's and 2 Type IX's for my Convoy Project.

I drilled out the stacks on the DD's and replaced the Masts with .010 plastic rod.

The Type IX's have a wider beam than the VII's so I was able to carve out the interior of the Conning Tower with a micro-bit and replace the metal 'stalk' periscope with .010 plastic rod.

Did you take the opportunity to populate it with a micro-scale crew? grin

I like the drilled-out stacks. I do that sometimes, too, if I can figure out how to do it carefully.

YA: no, but I have used modified 2-3mm figures for 1/1200.

The GHQ stacks can be tricky since some have raised detail (that has to be sanded off) or the angle of the stack can be an issue.

Take a medium size, fairly heavy, quality pin vise and chuck a sharp sewing needle into it (I keep one set up on the workbench).

Sand the stack smooth with an emery board and lightly place the tip in the middle of the stack. Hold the model down against a flat surface and apply pressure – and start to slowly turn the pin vise.

You now have your starter hole: for CA's/CL's/DD's, etc. you'll need a .80 needle. Drill out the hole and sand smooth. BC's and BB's you can use a larger drill bit and then smooth out with a micro-burr.

Trust me: it's one of those things that takes longer to explain than to do…

Regards,

Joe

Should have typed: .80 drill bit (not needle)

Joe, nice work but a funny choice.

Type IX were the long range boats, think Carribbean tanker runs or even south Atlantic.

The Hunts were mostly coastal convoys and Med.

Troopwo: just the next four that were on the workbench.

The Type IX's will be used in just the area's (scenarios) you listed.

The H Class for Med. Escort.
