The name gives a strong hint. The prize was having your retcon letter published in your favorite book. This was before the internet.

Originally the "prize" was seeing your letter in print in the comics. Later Stan the Man began mailing out empty envelopes. I never won one, but one of the guys in my elementary school did. Lucky dog!

I used to work for a large Comic book retailer and I once found one (envelope) in a copy of Thor #225. The famous Galactus with Short on cover.

I'm still a little bitter that they never gave me a No Prize for cracking the Spider Man Code.
