Do you have a plan of action? If so, what is it? |
79thPA | 17 Aug 2015 5:24 p.m. PST |
I have sold off most of my unpainted minis. Of the ones that I have left, I will paint some, and the rest will be sent off to be painted for me. |

Plan? Plan??? What plan? It was hard enough coming up with the purchase plan, and list. Must win the lotto soon, since I doubt I'll have the time to get them all painted, otherwise. |

One unit at a time. With a brush. |

I have a plan that I write and rewrite, when I am killing time with nothing else to do. I have not recently followed any of my plans, except priming the figures so I am ready for winter painting. Except of course, I have some plans to teach history at our community college which will keep me busy preparing for that, so it may delay my winter painting until spring. In spring the weather is too nice… well you can see where this is going. Those last 25 ACW figs I have to paint should get used to waiting. |

I was at a full stop painting my AWI minis, mainly because I didn't "need" any more element based units. I had units 95% finished that I had no motivation for. Then I started doing single figure skirmish games with TSATF rules and my block was unjammed. Since way more than half of my lead pile is AWI, that's my plan. It's working nicely. To make that into a Poll option, how about "Paint and organize in a different unit scale." |
kallman | 17 Aug 2015 6:16 p.m. PST |
Well does there have to be a plan? Can one just enjoy the journey and the prospect that one day one might paint all the miniatures? Once I am settled in Dallas I think I will finally have some free time when I am not working at the library to begin to work on the backlog. However I just enjoy getting things done as it happens. |
DWilliams | 17 Aug 2015 6:22 p.m. PST |
My plan is to stock up on as much lead as I can now, when I'm gainfully employed, even though I cannot possibly paint it all. Then, when I'm either unemployed or retired (with restricted income), I'll still have tons of miniatures to paint. Makes sense to me, anyway. |
sillypoint | 17 Aug 2015 6:24 p.m. PST |
Buy more minis…😁 support your local supplier 😉 |
Jeigheff | 17 Aug 2015 6:25 p.m. PST |
I dream that some day, I'll have more time, energy and motivation to paint and game than I do now, maybe if and when I retire. Then, so goes my dream, my miniature figure collection will really start to grow. This is more of a dream than a plan. In a moment, I'm going to put some paint on some 15mm Civil War figures, even if I paint for only a short time. |

I'm saving all of my unpainted minis for when I go into a retirement home. I need something to do in forty, or so, years. |
45thdiv | 17 Aug 2015 7:03 p.m. PST |
I too thought waiting until retirement, but my eyesight is fading fast. More in the right eye. And it's not really fixed by glasses. So I am painting every chance I get. I think i will have to sell off my cowboy , pulp and zombie set ups. I will not get to them in time. |

OMG! I'm supposed to have a plan!?! Why did none of you tell me this!?! I suppose the plan is that, unless I live to be 200 years old, I'll die long before I get anywhere near finished with what I've already bought, let alone the additions that I'll continue buying. |
raylev3 | 17 Aug 2015 8:15 p.m. PST |
My plan is to paint my figures in any order and at any time I feel like it, by gosh!!! |
KSmyth | 17 Aug 2015 8:30 p.m. PST |
Paint, paint, paint! It's what I do; it's who I am. In truth, I paint as often as possible, whether it's for a few minutes or a few hours. I haven't bought any miniatures since February (well, a few at Enfilade,) but no big orders. A unit at a time, what ever interests me. Try to keep it as fun and varied as possible. Galactic Knights spaceships tonight. HYW longbowmen tomorrow. |
gamershs | 17 Aug 2015 8:39 p.m. PST |
I am retired and still have many miniatures to paint. Remember, you can't die till you get all the miniatures painted. I expect to live another 50+ years :.] |
YogiBearMinis | 17 Aug 2015 8:54 p.m. PST |
DWilliams summed my plan up perfectly, buy til you have no more money then paint what you bought. I retired this last year, however, and have yet to start painting while I look for a new house with better gaming space. My wife thinks we are looking for a house together, but I am just in it for a new hobby room. |
Rod I Robertson | 17 Aug 2015 9:30 p.m. PST |
I plan to paint minis until I die. I don't plan to die, but if I do I'll have a lead lined casket I guess! Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson. |

Doctor X | 17 Aug 2015 10:10 p.m. PST |
I am painting some while I ship some out to have painted. My new lead purchases have slowed down dramatically in the last two years. At that time I was in accumulation mode for my current projects. So far I have managed to stay on plan even though there have been tempting side projects to jump into. |

Mooseworks8 | 17 Aug 2015 11:16 p.m. PST |
Plans revolve around army assembly or terrain/diorama use. I have recently realized that I do not have enough time to paint, game or read all the things I have. So I have began to simplify. One Hour Wargames has greatly helped. Such a subtle yet engrossing system. Anyhow all 15mm Pre-1870 gunpowder is going away to eBay. Along with several others. |
Rrobbyrobot | 17 Aug 2015 11:54 p.m. PST |
I don't really have a plan. Unless it's something along the lines of I buy figures I want to play games with. Painting them is just part of the overall picture… I guess it's just part of my nefarious scheme… |

Full speed ahead and damn the unpainted minis. |
Mute Bystander | 18 Aug 2015 3:12 a.m. PST |
"Rewind." Push "Play." 1) Sell/trade/give away all figures in 25+mm unless there are no 18mm/15mm/6mm/3mm sunstitutes available. 2) Paint (or have painted) by interest priority all remaining figures allowing for waxing and waning of interest at times. 3) Note: painting a chore that I must be driven to do most times. |
normsmith | 18 Aug 2015 3:41 a.m. PST |
I try to keep my unpainted pile to around a years worth of painting. That allows a couple of projects to be running at any one time. |
Razor78 | 18 Aug 2015 4:17 a.m. PST |
1. Decide to not buy any more figures until I get all the unpainted ones painted up. 2. Buy more unpainted figures |
Frederick | 18 Aug 2015 4:44 a.m. PST |
Right now I am now buying any unpainted figs unless they are key to finishing off a project (like the one 6 pounder to finish off 19th Canadian Infantry Brigade) and am chugging away on completing what I have I figure this will carry me for quite a while |
Grelber | 18 Aug 2015 5:03 a.m. PST |
I'm three years from retirement. When I retire, I should have more time, but less money. Hopefully the extra time will allow me to catch up on my painting. Grelber |
John Armatys | 18 Aug 2015 5:42 a.m. PST |
I retired a couple of years ago. I don't have a plan. If I don't have any painting I need to do I pick what I fancy from the lead pile and paint that. |
Oddball | 18 Aug 2015 5:43 a.m. PST |
Painting services. I have realized that I make more per hour than the time it would take me to paint them myself. |
darebear | 18 Aug 2015 5:57 a.m. PST |
I make a list for each year. I then post it and mark it off when I get them done. Unpainted minis make me sad so I have sold off everything that I will not realistically paint in my lifetime. I felt a lot better after that. and so did my bank account. Right now I only have some hero scape terrain to paint up and about 50 battlemechs. Then I am done and will probably immediately die of a stroke or heart attack. |
etotheipi | 18 Aug 2015 6:34 a.m. PST |
Buy fewer. Paint more. I took a hiatus from painting, but not buying when we moved last year. I'm trying to catch up. |
GamesPoet | 18 Aug 2015 6:34 a.m. PST |
My plans change over time. I'm not sure why this happens, and yet my interests seem to be varied, I move from one project to another, and I have fun doing it. As an example, I've been working on my 25/28mm Late Achaemenid Persian army with a Takabara unit, 2 skirmishing Archer units, and a unit of skirmishing Javelins completed, and I was in the middle of doing 4 Greek mercenaries units for this army. But then I got sidetracked with 40mm AWI. My current plan is to come through on my commitment to a "100 Days of Painting" effort that I have been making since August 1st, just to paint something every day for 100 days in a row, and see what happens with this. So far it has mostly been some 40mm MSC British Loyalists with the floppy hats and feathers. Originally I was just going to do 3, but that has increased to doing a batch of 12. I'm hoping to get back to those Greek mercenaries soon, got 3 GW hobbits to complete, and then there's a bunch of other figures in long lines and blocks across the scope of various eras spread out over my painting table and desk. Oh, and forgot to mention a 25/28mm Old Glory small Brigantine to finish painting, too … lol. How's that for a plan? |
Fonzie | 18 Aug 2015 7:47 a.m. PST |
I'm tackling my pile at a rate of 12 figures a day which is incredible compared to the 12 figures a month that I used to paint before. I have come up with a system that works well for me. :-) I found out that if I paint something different every day I do not lose interest in painting and I can turn out 12 well enough painted 28mm figures a day. So today I painted 12 crusader knights, yesterday 12 Anglo-Saxons and tomorrow I will paint 12 Got Stark bowmen.:-) The nice thing about this approach is that 3 armies at a time get finished in a reasonable amount of time instead of residing in the unpainted pile forever. |

Tom Reed | 18 Aug 2015 9:41 a.m. PST |
I have finally decided to send a couple of painting projects that have set for a couple of years to be painted, but I will still paint some of my stuff. |
Stosstruppen | 18 Aug 2015 10:09 a.m. PST |
1) Slow down on purchasing (the market place has killed me lately) 2) Send all SYW and WSS to be painted by someone else. 3) Stick to my newly developed painting plan of 100 6/10mm, 1 box of plastics, and 50-60 other per month. So far its going ok except #1. |
dsfrank | 18 Aug 2015 10:52 a.m. PST |
I have no plan – other than to buy more miniatures that I probably won't get around to painting – I might sell off some minis for projects I don't really care about any more but not really in a hurry |

My eventual plan to reduce the lead and plastic mountain is to first finish off the odd bits for armies that are almost done--that one odd base of hussars for a SYW Prussian army that has 400 painted and based infantry, etc. That approach will likely take care of my 15mm pile of lead, or at least the majority of it. The pile of 28mm plastics is mostly not painted, however, and my approach there is to start painting units for skirmish purposes, then later expand those skirmish warbands into full-fledged ranked units, then an army of ranked units. That way, at least, I can start gaming with the painted figures much sooner. Lion Rampant and Dragon Rampant are my inspiration for this. |
