I play in 28mm scale. I have an opportunity to buy some 1/72 buildings (fortifications) pretty cheap. I have never bought a 1/72 product before. Is that about a 20mm scale? I know the figs would not look good beside each other but I can't quite visualize how a tower or house would scale. What do you think? Hideous? Absurd, like Alice in Wonderland? Close enough for rock and roll?

Yes.

but I can't quite visualize how a tower or house would scale.

Many people, including me, use buildings "one size down". So IMHO it will work fine.

Ditto to MajorB with the proviso that the large heroic 28mm might be just too big for them.

if anyone complains, tell them they are free to game elsewhere or supply the terrain for future games.

I would think about the foot print of the unit. About how many men does each infantry stand represent in relation to the size of the building. Is the building representing a town or a structure? That's how I make my decision and usually go at least one size down in scale. I would think it would depend on how many men/units you gong to allow into these fortifications.

As above, I usually go a scale (or two) down for buildings etc.

Consider the footprint of the structure, and most important, make sure it is taller than the figures (or it looks silly).

I agree the two work well together. In fact some 28mm buildings look way to big for 28mm games

Depends also on the actual size of the figures. Could they get through the door? If so, good. I'm using Baueda 15mm marching camp with 20mm Newline Design Romans. It looks fine.
