As I prepare for my move to Dallas, TX, I see that 40K seems to be pretty popular at the local gaming stores. While I had pretty much stopped playing the game it seems I will at least have to come back to the fold if I want to get in some kind of gaming fix. I am not sure my forces will even be viable under the current edition. So what is the current version of 40K? Is it the Dark Vengeance box set? Will that have all the rules I need or will I have to purchase extra codexes, cards, dice, etc. to now play? Currently I have an old Chaos Space Marine force that was designed back during the 4th edition of the rules and represents more or less a Black Legion force of about 1500-1750 points. I also have a Blood Angels force build around the same time that is about 1500-1750 and a huge Eldar force that is waiting for painting and assembly with lots of grav tanks and such. I have not bought a new 40K model in years. Will I have to purchase lots of new big titans and tanks in order to be able to have at least a chance against an opponent? |

Currently on 7th Edition. More than likely you'll have to pick up the codicies as well, as I'm pretty sure nothing from 4th would still be current. The Eldar in fact just got a new book several months ago, with lots of griping about how "broken" it is. Regardless, it is very powerful. Also pretty sure most if not all your collection from them should still be usable. I've collected Eldar since 3rd, and never had to toss anything of my collection FREX. Damon. |

So what is the "standard" point size force? |
Garand | 16 Aug 2015 8:39 p.m. PST |
I don't think there is a standard size game in the same vein as Warhammer Fantasy. I generally play games around 1500 to 2000pts, rarely more or less than that. Damon. |

Depends on where you go I guess. I seem to be stuck in an area with WAAC gamers who play 3000 point games and complain that they never finish them. Really killed my interest in the game right as I was getting into it. |

1 too many. :( never went beyond 3rd myself smelt I'd end up with lots of unusable goodies way back then. Cheers |

That's too bad whitphoto. IMHO 1500pts is a nice sweet spot, allowing you to take plenty of toys but not so much that finishing the game is a chore. Damon. |

I gave up with 40K after they replaced the 'Wombles in Space' space marines! |

What does WAAC mean? After looking over what I would spend in order to be current just in terms of rule books and codexes (somewhere in the area of more than $300 USD just for books) I think I will just seek to encourage other game systems and miniatures by showing up and running some good looking and fun games. I can field more than a few 15 mm Science Fiction forces using Tomorrow's War. |

Win At Any Cost These individuals are known as WAAC'ers They will take the bare minimum and then Max out their heavy hitters. They will be usually playing the most powerful army in the game. They will spend the money to buy those 2-3 $150 USD models so that their army is even more stronger. They will do whatever it takes to win games, either by cheesing out their army or spin the rules in there favor oh and in some cases they will outright cheat if they can get away with it. They take getting beat very badly. |

I've seen the WH40K Dark Vengeance rulebook for between $20 USD to $35 USD of Ebay. The individual army codicies are $49.50 USD retail, or you could go on ebay and get used copies cheaper. Damon. |

@Mithmee, Ah, should have known. Thanks for that bit. Yea I am not into that kind of miniature wargaming. I play for the enjoyment of the social aspect as well as the drama of the battle that unfolds on the tabletop. @Garand, you make a good point there is always the secondary market and there always seems to be 40K items for sell on Ebay at less than retail. Although I do like to support local retailers as often as possible. I think the first order of business is that after I get settled in Dallas is to go the various gaming venues and get a feel for how folks like to play. From what I have seen on the various Dallas and Texas Facebook groups folks appear extremely affable. |

Isn't Age of Sigmar the latest version?

Don't do it. If no one plays, it will die. Plenty of other games are on fire in that neck of the woods. X-wing is about to explode. |

@Mithmee – Age of Sigmar is the newest Warhammer Fantasy, not 40K. @Garand – Dark Vengance is from 5th edition (creeping into 6th) so won't be of any use with those who play the newest edition (7th). @Kallman – Any army you have now should be viable, you'll just have to tweak the list to conform to the newest codex (Not all of them have been updated to 7th edition yet, but they're getting there). Definitely look at 2nd hand. To save money, you could just stick with one army and buy the Codex for that army + 7th Edition rules .. but they have been updating rules so quickly I'm not sure how much longer 7th has! Definitely see how folks play. See if they're interested in other games as well. If it's not a Games Workshop store, there's a good chance you'll find someone interested! |

Age of Sigmar is the newest Warhammer Fantasy, not 40K. Are you sure? Because that looks more like a Space Marine then any from Fantasy. |

Well I have seen the game scene or at least part of it in Dallas. 40K is Huge at least from what I have seen so far. Lots of nice folks playing which is a plus. I am not sure I want to go back into the money rabbit hole that 40K can become. However I do want to get some gaming in. Sadly I did not bring all of my 40K as I was not going to go down that road. Which means I will have to not only buy the basic game and a codex but some models as well. Yeesh. Maybe I can get them interested in Bolt Action. |

And I am not sure why if X-Wing is about to 'explode' that helps this guy's questions on 40K. The two are hardly in the same category of 'sci-fi'. |

When someone is looking for a ground combat game with company sized forces, I'm not sure why people will conclude that a dogfighting game based on some space opera movie from the 70's is relevant :P |

Kallman, the cut of the players is way more important then the Edition being played. :) avoid the prats and have fun. :D |
