Some of the latest from Good Ground, our 10mm Wilder's Lightning Brigade and US Dismounted Cavalry. I finally got around to painting these and taking a few photos.

I wish my eyesight was good enough for 10mm, those are terrific!

Now I just need to find suitable 15mm figures for The Lightning Brigade as my starter Union force is Thomas' corps in the Chickamauga/Chattanooga campaign.

These figures are nice and I considered going with 10mm but as with jowady, my eyesight just can't handle painting that small. 15m mis about the lower limit.

Bill, what do we know about the formations they fought in? Similar to "regular" dismounted, carbine armed cavalry? For rules like FF Regimental, they form one rank deep, extended line, vice line of battle. So if contacted by an enemy LOB, they would be at a disadvantage of unit cohesion?

I have read of no references to special formations, they were fighting as infantry in line. However, that would include extended line to cover larger frontages such as they did at Chickamauga. They could do this because they had such a tremendous volume of fire from their Spencer Rifles. This is why many opposing commanders thought they were fighting a division. Larger frontage and greater firepower. Extended line in the regimental game is a disadvantage. In the brigade game one loses the "supported line " advantage in melee, but there is not a penalty per se.

Bill,

That is why I am wondering [aloud] whether they were trained to fight in shoulder to shoulder, 2 ranks, a la infantry, AND if in the looser dismounted cavalry skirmish line, and what we believe we know about the prevalence/frequency of those choices. I do recall from the cavalry manual, that once dismounted, and the appropriate arrangements of the horses reins to one another and then to the mounted trooper, they formed shoulder to shoulder in two ranks, prepared for the next order.

Whereas, FF, tends to limit dismounted "cavalry" to a single extended, skirmish-like formation…with its attendant pros and cons….could mounted rifles maneuver & fight in a LoB?With those various pros/cons?

@rmcaras …. Yes, they were infantry and trained to form a traditional line of battle. They received the horses and mules well after they were trained as regular infantry.
