"A haul of planets from Nasa's Kepler telescope includes a world sharing many characteristics with Earth.

Kepler-452b orbits at a very similar distance from its star, though its radius is 60% larger.

Mission scientists said they believed it was the most Earth-like planet yet.

Such worlds are of interest to astronomers because they might be small and cool enough to host liquid water on their surface – and might therefore be hospitable to life.

I do believe the properties described for Kepler-452b are the most Earth-like I've come across for a confirmed planet to dateDr Suzanne Aigrain, Oxford University
Nasa's science chief John Grunsfeld called the new world "Earth 2.0" and the "closest so far" to our home…"

'Alien Earth' is among eight new far-off planets

"One of eight new planets spied in distant solar systems has usurped the title of "most Earth-like alien world", astronomers have said.

All eight were picked out by Nasa's Kepler space telescope, taking its tally of such "exoplanets" past 1,000.

But only three sit safely within the "habitable zone" of their host star – and one in particular is rocky, like Earth, as well as only slightly warmer.

The find was revealed at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society…"

That is interesting.

I wish they'd spend more time mapping and studying the closest 10 – 20 star systems near us, so we can determine how many planets they have, orbits, habitability, etc..

Perhaps they are already doing that, and I'm just not aware of it.

Would love to see some actual closeup (relatively) telescope images of nearby planets and stars.

They probably are but this sort of thing makes for a better press release!
