Mike Siggins, writing in the old Battlegames magazine, once admitted that he was afraid of three things in the hobby: matt varnish, magazine editors, and basing tanks. What scares you? |

Like the Gauls, I'm scared of the sky falling on my head.
….and dropping storage boxes full of my painted figures. Probably more the dropping than the falling. |

What scares me is when someone says "Hey! Let's all get into XXXXXX. We can all buy a unit or two and paint them up and get into it quickly and cheaply." I just slowly fade out the door when someone says that. I cured the dropping the figures thing. I built carrying cases where the stands fit in under guide slots in the base so you can drop them any way you want and they stay locked in. |

It's not the dropping that's the problem…. it's the landing. Yes I've done it too, with a newly panted box of 25mm Indians, add-ons for my Alexandrian Imperials. Can I add, people who don't handle your figures like their own (you know them, the careless spear/sword benders, who pick up units by the handfull) I agree with fire and burglars, although anyone who wanted to steal my figures would have to come team handed and all be built like Charles Atlas, |

Everything scares me. New rules. More than one fig per base. Pizza with pineapple. Figs with guns that all load from the wrong end. Mosquitos. Fast games with simple rules. King Tigers. Drivers who don't stop for redlights (had a lot of miniatures damaged in an accident some years back). |

Spiders and rapidly shifting boxes of miniatures terrain and other stuff in my car. Nothing quite like examining a box of painted lancers after it's done a somersault. |

Other people handling my Micro-Armour, a.k.a. "Bent Barrel Disorder." That my wife will finally ask, "How much of this stuff do you actually have"? Brrrr. |

Spray sealing sessions that "don't turn out quite right". About ten years ago, while moving, I dropped a box of Perry dark age 28's I'd really put a lot of work into. It was just a large shoebox, with them all standing on movement trays inside. I was trying to be really careful, but turned and bumped into something and dropped it. I picked it back up, and carefully took it inside and put it on an out-of-the-way shelf. I didn't open it for over a month. I had to work up to it. It was a mess, but I restored all but one poor fellow to their former state. His body mangled, he donated a head to save a fellow barbarian. |

Spiders. So I was in my early teens, and as a avid Boy Scout, I got to go to Philmont Scout Ranch. (Donated by Waite Phillips of Phillips 66, where the 66 is 66 wet wells in a row at a time where one of ten was profitable.) Right near Cimarron, NM. Tooth of time. Santa Fe Trail. Good stuff, that. Hot, dry, arid, sunny. Very different from the foothills of the Appalachians. So there were places we needed to get through before the sun, like Turkey Creek Canyon, which apparently is a very large natural convection oven. So we drink a lot of water before bed to (1) hydrate and (2) wake us up early. So I wake up at pee-wee hours and there's a spider. Wolf spider. Not particularly dangerous, but very scary, furry, and tarantula-esque. Right on top of my mouth. Still groggy, I yawn. I could feel it struggle and actually hear an "eeeee! eeeeee!" sound inside my head. So I don't like spiders. They creep me out. And a little fright, usually evoking the fight side of the fight or flight response. Real ones, that is. Got tons of "giant" spiders for the tabletop. |
