My attempt to play through and document all of the scenarios in One Hour Wargames, in order, continues. This time it's Scenario 9 – Double Delaying Action – using my Great Northern War armies and a heavily modified version of the Horse and Musket rules.

It's a great way to get a lot of game into a small space. Did you award the Swedes any advantages?

I didn't award any advantages, no. It's a tricky thing to balance when there's a fixed six units per side.

I have considered allowing the Swedish infantry to charge as if they were cavalry, but with the penalty that a unit which does so cannot then shoot until it spends a turn reforming. However I'm not sure, in he context of the game, whether it's an ability which would ever be used, since concentrating firepower is generally a better option for infantry.

Quite the report!

Very nice. Do you give and bonus for flank or rear melee attacks? How long did the game last? I played my first OHW game a few days ago (American Civil War) and it lasted a disappointing 15 minutes from start to finish.

79thPA – There is a bonus for flank and rear attacks in the sets with close combat, and I use that.

The ACW set is an odd one, with no close combat. I was mystified by it at first, but having played some of the other sets (and, I admit, tweaked them a bit) I'm getting a feel for them now. Like all of the sets they aren't perfect, but they do the job.

Great stuff! Love the buildings. I've been meaning to build a few of them.

I think I like your idea of just 5 hits better. The lower number makes it much easier to track without a roster, Of course, that limits the granularity of the ratings of units.

I did the next scenario in the book – Late Arrivals – with the same rules and figures.

I used the same armies for Scenario 12 in the book – An Unfortunate Oversight
