I need to know the proper sash color for Union Generals. I have come up with two colors: Buff & Crimson. Two different sources listed two different colors. Help. Thanks.

Buff is for staff and higher, IE General Officers. CS collars and cuffs would also, theoretically, be buff. of course, only those that could afford private purchase items usually had the full regalia. The Crimson, which is actually more of a burgundy color, is for field grade officers IE Captains and lieutenants and such.

Thanks for the post and reply. I have been using crimson. I notice that the sculptures for Generals tend to not have a sash at all.

If I were to make a stand with the general and the aide, then the aide would have a buff color sash. Do I have that right?

Thanks,

Matthew

ACWBill, did all Union field/junior officers use crimson? I thought that they'd wear the corps (ie arm of service) colour. Or am I confusing them with Confederates?

Cheers.

@Dal:

All field/line officers wore crimson silk regardless of their branch of service.

Sgt Majs, First Sgts and a few other comparable ranks wore a red worsted sash.

Medical department officers wore a medium or emerald green sash.

The sash colours are exactly as noted by 79th PA

A lot of officers did dispense with them in the field

Was referring to infantry, but I believe all branches were the same on sash color save for the medical corps, which wore green. Branch color was reflected in chevrons, trim and shoulder boards.

Just saw 79PA and he has it right. Yes Matthew, buff would be proper for staff officer sashes.

Thanks, gents. I have a little repainting to do.

Thank you. I appreciate the info. Buff it is. I assume tassels would be the same color as the sash?

Thanks for that. I have been working up 2 and 3 figures stands to show officers command strength. I will give the staff officers buff sashes.

Yes, tassels and sash are the same color.
