Do you make your own, or buy the commercial products? |
Mako11 | 14 Aug 2015 7:23 p.m. PST |
Buy commercial. It is quite easy to do apparently, if you have access to sawdust, and a bit of dye. You need a good place to spread it out to dry as well. |
79thPA | 14 Aug 2015 7:30 p.m. PST |
It's not worth my time to do anything other than buy it. |

Nope. Way too much work, even for a hereditary Scottish cheapskate like me. Woodland Scenics. Doug |

Last time I did that, my terrain panels smelled like pizza. And then the mold set in… I use commercial ground foam now. - Ix |

Heck no. I never run out of the commercial stuff, why do I need more (and why would i even try to make it)? |
CeruLucifus | 14 Aug 2015 10:27 p.m. PST |
Buy my own. It's interesting to know how people make it but when all is said and done, it's so easy and economical to buy. |

…and the stuff in the shops is 'always' the same, no colour matching, no mess. |
Dynaman8789 | 15 Aug 2015 5:50 a.m. PST |
Both. Not color matched is actually a plus, look at any large plot ofground and notice the color varition. |
Zeelow | 15 Aug 2015 5:58 a.m. PST |
No. Buy woodland Scenic material. |

The nearest I come to making y own flock, is when I mix up different manufacturers commercial flocks, and then to ensure the earth is of a dark tone, add in the scrapings from the bottom of my tea caddy (all the really dusty tea leaves that leak from the tea bags). |

I mix commercial fine flock with static grass |

I buy it commercially made as others have stated I have too little time to make my own. |

I've done both, although I don't use a lot of flock. I used it on a couple of figures to hide flawed or broken parts of the miniature. I still have a lot of flock available, but I can't find it for some reason. |

In the days before Woodland Scenics, I made my own. Back then, oddly stained sawdust was the commercial norm. The brand name "Life-Like" jumps to mind. Clearly made to look like grass from a part of the world I had never been in. I do still made ground foam-rubber when an odd color is needed. But a re-blend of Woodland Scenics turfs is the stable to maintain some consistency. Here is a website dedicated to some of my terrain effects: link If the photo had not blurred, you could even read my "Secret" blending formula. |

There is NO better deal out there than SCENIC EXPRESS!!! Known more as a railroad modelling store, this place is an absolute wargamer's dream come true! They have an staggeringly massive line of flocks, textures, trees, foliage, tufts, you name it. I have used them for years. Their static grass and ground flock simply cannot be beat for the volume and price. Noch, Games Workshop, Woodland Scenics, no other place can come close to offering this kind of volume and value. Consider that you pay like $5 USD-$7 for a tiny tub of static grass to a smallish to small/medium bag of static grass of flock and you're getting only a few ounces. Check this out. A huge 64-ounce(that's four pounds!) jug of flock for $15.49 USD. link link And even better, a giant 1 POUND bag of static grass for $24.98 USD. link With one bag of their static grass, you can do an entire 4 x 8 terrain board and have enough left to do many modular terrain pieces and also still have enough left to do the bases of several armies of miniatures. It's an amazing deal. Compare that to a Noch bag of static grass, which here you're paying $4.75 USD for less than an OUNCE, and $13.75 USD for 3.5 OUNCES. With S.E. you're getting 16 ounces, a full pound for $24.95 USD! auction auction Since I found Scenic Express I have had no need to make my own flock, not worth the time and hassle when I can get volume like that. |

Both. I have some large containers full of dried tea leaves and dried coffee grounds. Nuked them in the microwave to dry them out and kill anything that might think about turning to compost. The texture of these is not available in commercial flocks. |
Mithridates | 17 Aug 2015 3:45 p.m. PST |
Scenic Express sounds tempting. I like the idea of using the microwave – to-date I leave my used tea leaves out in the summer sun. Peppermint tea leaves leave a subtle scent/perfume on the bases……..makes ideal forest litter. |
Patrick Sexton | 18 Aug 2015 10:55 a.m. PST |
Nope, I buy it off the rack. |
Sgt Slag | 19 Aug 2015 9:01 a.m. PST |
I buy colored sands, 2-3 colors, mix, and apply to bases. I buy my colored sands at the Dollar Store -- can't beat that price with a stick! Cheers! |

I buy the flock off the shelf. The trees I make from twigs garnered in the yard etc. I have Michaels store near me that I buy stuff for the trees and hedges. It is much cheaper than buying Woodland Scenic. |

Buy commercial and mix several colors and types to get the desired result. |
TKindred | 27 Aug 2015 7:47 p.m. PST |
Back in the day I made my own with sawdust and RIT dye. Mix it all together in a large bin, then dry it on cookie sheets in the oven. I've also used coffee grounds and tea leaves, as well as real dirt. The key to using organics, including dirt, is to, again, bake it for an hour or more at 250 degrees to kill any biologics living in it. Then make sure you seal it well after painting. Nowadays I buy large shaker bottles of Woodland Scenics stuff. |
Mooseworks8 | 02 Sep 2015 2:36 a.m. PST |
I both buy and craft flock. |
Grumble87106 | 02 Sep 2015 5:40 p.m. PST |
I use tea leaves (after drinking it). Varied textures and colors for my different climates. We drink a lot of different kinds of tea, so that helps with the variety. I do have some commercial flocking as well, but I like the variety in the tea colors. |
