Hi, just curious, anyone in Florida, game with 54mm figures? Civil War? WWII? or just general color vs color? or am I abit too hopeful for these? |

You might also want to ask on the LittleWars Yahoogroup, which is devoted to gaming with larger scale figures. |

54mm is great for skirmish gaming. We do quite a bit in Virginia, if you ever get up this way.

I do enough painting on my 28mm figures, lol… and I like to do large armies(if having to do a specific period with themed figures I can pretty much do without tanks) but with tanks I have a problem as the themed tanks(aside from the regular Patton's) are kinda expensive. |

I do a lot of FIW and WW2 skirmish gaming in Northern Virginia. Check with Ken at all the king's men. He attends all of the conventions down south. He will know. Matthew |

I live up North, but I game with 54mm Army Men figures. They paint up very quickly, if you use the plastic's color… I paint up only the bits that differ from the plastic's color, using craft paints, then I apply The Dip. At arm's length, they look pretty good. Add a decent, 2"-square base, with something like flock, or mixed colors of sand, to texture the base, and they look even better. Gaming with 54mm Army Men is fun, as the armies cost pennies. The only issue is finding, and paying for, true scale Tanks. Most Army Men sets come with 40mm scale Tanks, and true 54mm scale Tanks can cost $12 USD+ per Tank! Yikes! If you are willing to compromise on scale, then the 40mm scale Tanks can be made to look quite good on the table: paint up the small number of bits that differ from the plastic's color (Camouflage is actually easy to achieve, both on vehicles, and men, by just applying the appropriate colors of craft paint, in irregular patterns, over the plastic base color), then add some peel-n-stick numbers, in the appropriate colors (found at craft stores), then apply The Dip… I prefer Minwax Polyshades Royal Walnut, as it is more brown, in color, making the men, and vehicles, appear to be quite used, and dirty. There are dry-transfer decals for rank patches, as well as eye pupils, and even tattoos! I've only tried the NCO rank, and some different unit patches, but they worked quite well, and they were easy to apply -- seal them beneath a coat of The Dip, to preserve them, as well as to achieve that grunge look. Paint up some Army Men figures for fun, then put together a game, with some simple terrain, and invite some interested friends over… Cheers! |
