"Most civilians' idea of basic training is embodied in a burly and ill-tempered drill sergeant yelling at young soldiers as they run or do pushups. Times have changed, said Thriso Hamilton, a former drill sergeant and now a civilian training specialist at Fort Jackson, S.C., one of four sites where the Army's Basic Combat Training is conducted. The Army recently validated changes to its 10-week Basic Combat Training program that will take effect Oct. 1. I thought the whole point of the army is that it is a "war going force" That was your father's army. The armed forces must now react to floods, hurricanes, tidal waves, etc. Oh, and be ready for armed combat, just in case. Sort of like Rommel having his troops plant asparagus and hedgehogs on the Atlantic Wall. |

God ! The military exists, especially in Combat Arms, to break things and kill people. Those skilsl have to be paramount in the training of the soldier … |
