"Last weekend I came across this really interesting blog realmofchaos80s.blogspot.co.uk/, its largely about third edition Warhammer with an emphasis on Chaos and is written by someone who is clearly a stalwart of the "OldHammer" community*. It has lots of nice pictures of old Games Workshop miniatures, reviews of old White Dwarfs, interviews with the Games Workshop old guard and reports of OldHammer events. Its focus is on a period from just before I started wargaming to my earliest days, so it really plays to my nostalgia. Plus, its emphasis on returning to older models and rules is exactly where I am at the moment.

I love this blog and I want to emphasise that because I don't want what follows to come across as criticism, because I think it illustrates something interesting.

Unsurprisingly, the writer is not a big fan of recent editions of Warhammer or the current direction of Games Workshop as a company. It doesn't seem to break out into outright hostility; the focus of the blog is looking at Games Workshop's old products, not complaining about their current ones…"

I started in 3rd Edition playing Chaos Warbands from the 2 hardcover tomes at the time. It was what set the hook for me to jump into the first boxed set when it came out with 4th Edition.

This is what disappoints me most about GW's current direction. Back in the day you could start your collection as a warband and build onto it as you added more retinue. Before long you had a small army on the table and a jump to 2,000 points wasn't such an intimidating & cost prohibitive leap. They could have easily used this same (successful) formula from the past. (Although most of the current staff in GW games development probably weren't even born when this was happening).

In AoS you can do just that. Start with what comes in the box. Ad some more figures as you go. Or not.

The way the rules work you could have a very small number of figures in an "army" and things will work just fine. In some of the scenarios this won't work but in a lot of them it will.

At around $250 USD to $750 USD or more.

Death is not the end.

There's always a Necromancer or two who wants to stir up old and near forgotten bone piles. I'd put my money on them to breath a bit of life into WFB long after the Lords of Change running GW consign it to Hell.

I can feel nostalgia, like a tentacle from the Abyss, creeping upon me even now!
