About a year ago we formed an interest group to explore and design an IWG. An IWG is an acronym for "International War Game" which would be carried on by e-mail or post, and which pits the gamer as head of a country versus other gamers. Each gamer manages the military campaigns, forces, economics, and diplomacy of his country. This style of game has been around for a while but most of them do not end well, and this group was formed to try and find a cure for that problem.

We have thrashed a lot of things out and the interested players are now to the point of designing their countries for the final map. There are other items still being thrashed out, but the map is essential many felt to a sense of continuity and visuals to the game. I think one is completely unnecessary, but I'm willing to go along with the rest. Each player will design three hypothetical countries they would like to command according to the guidelines given, and can chose among the final ones for the final copy. The reason or the three of them is that these will be used as "test beds" to fine tune how the players want to handle and use the other phases of the game such as campaigns, movement, diplomacy, economics etc., and the mechanics (for example is movement sticky or non-sticky) We have chosen an area and point map. Sticky/non-sticky can be simply explained by this. Assume three provinces or areas in a row, A,B, and C. Force 1 moves from A to B, force 2 moves from B to C. If the movement is "sticky" then the movement of A locks B into C, if non-sticky the above movements go through.

Players interested in this are invited to join, HOWEVER, please be advised that if you do you WILL BE EPXTECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS with inputs and suggestions and debates. That is, "classroom participation" is mandated, and if you want to be in on the final design and play you will have to participate in the preliminaries. Persons looking for free stuff only will be bounced after a few weeks unless your participation is active. If you wish to join the effort, contact me at sigurd@eclipse.net.

The era of the campaign will be in the 18th century.

Sounds interesting but I guess I don't understand how these various players/countries will fight each other if war breaks out between them?

Dear MghFond

Umm… the usual way, maneuvers on a map or campaign choices. Then the battles must be resolved abstractly by an umpire.
