I just finished Stephen Brumwell's Redcoats: The British Soldier and War in the Americas, 1755-1763, which I highly recommend. I am now looking for the same, but for France. I have not had much luck search LOC subject headings on Worldcat or searching on Amazon. Outside of Parkman and Osprey, what can you recommend to me?

Rene Chartrand wrote a short paperback of the French Soldier in Colonial America. It might give you a start. Also some of his Osprey books are good, but basic starting points.

The French Invasion of Western Pennsylvania by Donald H. Kent might be of interest. I haven't read the book you mentioned, so I don't know exactly what you are looking for.

The French Armies in the Seven Years' War, by Lee Kennett, 1967, Duke University Press, may be of some interest. The subtitle is "A study in military organization and administration," which gives a good idea of its scope. This is not a book about battles and first hand accounts, but its gives good insights into the difficulties of moving and supplying armies.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I'm traveling and don't have an opportunity to respond in detail ATM but I plan to when I return.

@ge2002bill: that last one was one I had found in the meantime as well and I took a chance on it, and will report back when I receive it. Seems to be both an essay/short book and original drill manual. I gather the drill manual portion is in French and the essay is in English, but it's unclear whether there is also an English translation of drill manual, and then if there is, how much room out of a total of 100 pages would be left for the essay. I guess I'll find out!

I found some other leads I'll also share too.

This won't help you much on the N American campaigns as such, but if you want background on how the French army functioned in the FIW/SYW era, this is very good:

Sorry – I hadn't seen LaserGrenadier's post and tried to edit, but the internet was playing up. As he says, Kennett's book is about admin and logistics and doesn't really look outside of Europe, but is a good source of background info on how French troops operated in the field which would have been pretty much universal. As one review I've seen points out, how the army baked its bread on the march is more fundamental than how many ranks the cavalry charged in.
