Other than the color you paint them, how would they differ from Heer/Army units? |

Not much. In any case, they were actually Army from Nov 1943 (they were re-designated as 'Feld-Division (L)' from that point). There weren't really any significant organisational differences between them and Army infantry divisions/grenadier regiments and even the uniforms started changing to Army uniforms throughout 1944 (with a mixture often seen in photos). There are a few previous threads. Here's one: TMP link |

As noted above, from 44 they were pretty much indistinguishable from Heer units, apart from the jazzy LFD camo jackets. Earlier in the war they commonly wore Fliegerbluse jackets instead of infantry jackets. Luftwaffe chest and collar insignia were different of course, until they were assimilated in to the Heer. |

As noted, much the same although their combat record is not exactly distinguished A good example of how the Third Reich wasted scant resources |

I have a suspicion the classic WW2 film 'The Great Escape' which correctly had the German LW guards in their blue uniforms led to a generation of novice wargamers painting their Wehrmacht in an overly blue grey rather than proper field grey! Nowadays we have the internet and are spoilt rotten. |
