What is your favorite WWII Tank?

Lets leave self-propelled guns and tank hunters out of this for now.

The vehicle has to have tracks and a Turret.

Texas Jack08 Aug 2015 1:48 a.m. PST

Aesthetically, I like the Crusader, though the Cromwell is a very close second.

Mako1108 Aug 2015 1:52 a.m. PST

Hmmm, probably have to go with the Panther A.

Of course, the Tiger I and Tiger II Henschel get honorable mentions as well.

M26 for the Americans.

T-34/85 for the Russians.

Cromwell VII for the British (just really like the looks of it, even though the Firefly seems like an obvious choice).

Yea, Panther A, since it is such a nice, balanced design.

Favorite but not best. Interesting.

M26

Churchill MkVII – always liked it. Fond memories as a 12 year old assembling the Airfix kit and they have/had a Churchill on display at the Imperial War Museum London.

skippy000108 Aug 2015 4:03 a.m. PST

M3 Stuart, early with the side sponson .30 cals still mounted. Fast, small, gyrostabilised, canister rounds-what's not to like?

Or a Pz III with US, Brit and Russian mods.

Dynaman878908 Aug 2015 4:38 a.m. PST

Too many to choose just one.

Sherman – kinda ugly but a good design.
Panther – All around lovely design
T34 – If I *HAD* to choose this would win, warhorse of a tank that showed the way of the future.
Char B1 – Just plain cool.

Always liked the Matilda II

You do realize what we do with silly restrictions around here , don't you?
We ignore them. You would ban discussions on StuGs and Su-76s?

M4 Sherman in the "Easy 8" configuration…..

I've also got some love for the M24…

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut08 Aug 2015 6:21 a.m. PST

I reject your rules and substitute my own.

Stug III. Oddly, I have never built a model of it in any scale.

<happily whistles while wandering off to find a Stug 3 model>

plutarch 6408 Aug 2015 6:35 a.m. PST

PzIV or Matilda II for me…

Winston Smith08 Aug 2015 6:38 a.m. PST

I like big boxy turrets that look like tool sheds. Thus some love here for the KV-2 and Challenger. Oh sure the Cromwell has a boxy turret, but the Challenger is a vast improvement.

Jeigheff08 Aug 2015 7:24 a.m. PST

Probably the Panzer IV.

OldGrenadier Fezian08 Aug 2015 7:42 a.m. PST

Somua S-35.

The Tin Dictator08 Aug 2015 8:11 a.m. PST

We did this poll a while back.
My vote is still for the T-35 with the 5 turrets, high profile, slow movement, and worthless guns.

Gone Fishing08 Aug 2015 8:20 a.m. PST

The Jagdpanther and the Elefant for me. Not really because they were the "best" tanks, which they emphatically weren't (the second being a downright awful contraption, particularly for the men inside), but because they look so imposing.

For all round performance it would have to be the T-34 or the Panther.

But then I have a fondness for Ha-Gos as well. Useless bits of tin against anything more than a machine gun, but still…

vicmagpa108 Aug 2015 8:46 a.m. PST

t-34/85 a well rounded proven tank. in all time periods.

I have to go with the Soviet JS types – they just look brutal and nasty.

wrgmr108 Aug 2015 9:21 a.m. PST

Churchill Mk IV
Pz Mk III

Barenakedleadies08 Aug 2015 9:21 a.m. PST

Panther with side skirts.

Honorable mention goes to the PZ II. Always loved the look of that one even if it's basically recon.

Personal logo Jeff Ewing Supporting Member of TMP08 Aug 2015 9:33 a.m. PST

I will cheerfully own to loving useless tanks: T-26, Matilda I, m11-39. But for all-around plays every game it has to the pzkw III.

eddy195708 Aug 2015 9:36 a.m. PST

Cromwell and Panther

JasonAfrika08 Aug 2015 9:42 a.m. PST

Norman D Landings08 Aug 2015 9:56 a.m. PST

Centurion all the way. Brilliant piece of kit.

GarrisonMiniatures08 Aug 2015 10:25 a.m. PST

Always like the weird ones – Matilda 1, most of the Russian or Japanese lights, especially the amphibious ones.

Weasel08 Aug 2015 10:36 a.m. PST

Based purely on looks and underdog appreciation, I am going to say the Crusader.

Personal logo Saber6 Supporting Member of TMP Fezian08 Aug 2015 11:28 a.m. PST

Sherman, with weak spot for the Grant

Panzer IV F2-G, also 1943 model T-34

Allen5708 Aug 2015 1:26 p.m. PST

Probably because they were my first three tank models but objectively they were still nice looking machines.

1. Sherman
2. Panther
3. JS III

M22 Locust – Loved the idea of an airborne tank

picture

The Comet – though a late war cruiser tank

Though loved one of my first models – the Lee/Grant – painted up in Western Desert Scheme

chasseur08 Aug 2015 2:24 p.m. PST

I discovered military history through reading Brazen Chariots and so I will always have a soft spot for Honeys with the Crusader II a close second. Something fatally romantic about both of those vehicles.
