They've been out for a while now but I went a bit quiet on showing them off as the demand was far more than I could have hoped, which is amazing. On the downside it meant I had to queue people and cast furiously. Just about caught up today!

They look great together. Sculpted by Phil Hynes and painted by Paul Cubbin

I'm really pleased with them and all they mean to me (and the people who have bought them!). The entire Believable Female Miniatures Project was started because I couldn't find what I wanted – simply shieldmaidens for dark age gaming that didn't have metal boob plate armour or skirt slits up to the belly button or Valkyrie helmets. It was only when my hands started giving up (repetitive strain from making too many dice bags!) I decided to see if I could make it work.

The whole project has gone down…. massively better than I expected! Which of course is good for business (and I am not so reliant on my rubbish painful hands to survive, woohoo!), but my faith in humanity has been hugely restored too. I was starting to believe that I was in a minority of wargamers who wanted to be able to choose female miniatures that weren't entirely based around being eye candy/fantasy, and have learnt that it really isn't a minority at all. The demographic of people buying them (as well as the other ranges I now stock with the same ethos) has been pretty much as wide as it can get, which is another good thing! I receive a lot of emails from customers saying how they have been using my miniatures to introduce young girls into the hobby, whereas they were put off before because of inappropriate minis.

So yeah, an update really! First unit is completo and grand, more units being sculpted at the moment, and lots to release over the next few months.

As the parent of a 12-year-old daughter enthusiastic about painting, I applaud this!

The chap from Dux Homunculorum wrote a blog piece about using SAGA lite rules and my Hervor model to introduce his eight year old to gaming :D

They look really great! --and nice work getting Paul Cubbin to paint them!

Hopefully, we will see additional figures added to this line! …thumbs up

Love them! I'm hoping they are 15mm, but I'm guessing they're 28's?

Thank you. I hate chain mail bikinis. You need a few more figures with helmets. Most ladies are smart enough to know that helmets are a good thing even if you cant afford an expensive chain mail hauberk.

They are excellent, well done for this initiative and good luck with selling more.

I too, HATE the fantasy genre females looking like supermodels in mail and little else.

Give me a believable female Shield-maiden anytime!

ScottS07 Aug 2015 2:23 p.m. PST

Just ordered the set; they look perfect.

Ashokmarine07 Aug 2015 3:40 p.m. PST

Long over due. Very nice models thanks for sharing.

I just ordered a set too. They'll go nicely with my SAGA Viking warband.

Nice work! Those would work well as far fantasy warriors or Norse shield maidens.

I placed an order with Annie just before these figures started coming out, and service across the pond is pretty good!
I'm planning on ordering these as well to go with my Saga Vikings as some other things from her about Christmas time.
I've used up enough green stuff filling in skirt slits so my Saxons had a queen to go along with their BTD king, and turning the incredibly long loin cloths into skirts.

Great stuff, totally agree with your premise.

How about a miniature of Aethelflaed- Warrior Queen of the Mercians?

Cerdic07 Aug 2015 5:30 p.m. PST

That is a good idea, jacksarge!

Well done Dice Bag Lady. I spoke to you at Salute and you seemed proper!

Bad Squiddo Games08 Aug 2015 3:21 a.m. PST

Wow thanks for all that! I hugely appreciate it!

Lots more dark ages en route, a REALLY amazing character I can't wait to show off too….

They are 28mm, sorry Darkest Star! Peter Pig do some 15mm ones though!

These shieldmaidens are in resin, and will stay so. But as the demand is much higher than expected, most of the future releases will be in metal. Pulling shieldmaidens out of rubber and sawing blocks off is counter productive to my bad hands thing :D This unit would need almost resculpting to survive the metal casting.

I've got variant packs too to come out as well, possibly of this pack, but future packs will have some conversions, so heavier armoured pack, helmet pack etc.

now I know people want them, I can plan more ambitiously! This really was "well I guess if I doesn't take off I've just bought a very expensive unit for myself!" at conception.

And of course, in the law of sod, I've been too busy with all the extra work I've created for myself to be able to paint or play with them myself yet! Soon!

Thanks Cerdic, glad to be proper :D

I look forward to more in the future!

I've got a decent sized Wargames Foundry Viking army. They make a few women vikings; some are ridiculous cheesecake (and I haven't bothered with those) but others are more believable. These will make a great addition to that army.

Hopefully my daughter will use them to beat me in a wargame one day. ;)

Footslogger08 Aug 2015 10:54 a.m. PST

I could have done with these shieldmaidens some years back when I was doing Rohan figures. Had to use a lot of greenstuff to get what I wanted.

Glad it's all taking off.

RobBrennan15 Aug 2015 5:29 a.m. PST

Excellent work.

Craig Ambler27 Aug 2015 5:22 a.m. PST

Great figures there. I will have to get some for D&D.

Good one

Craig
