Pz 1 with a T-26 turret? odd.

Picture was taken by the end of Spanish Civil War, in Barcelona's Diagonal Avenue after this town occupation by the Nationalists in 1939. Our odd tank is followed by several 'normal' Panzer I ausf. A and preceded by a turretless T-26.

And it appears to be towing a wheeled trailer!

The "trailer" rather looks like a 37mm PAK….

Any chance it's a T-26 parked directly behind a turretless PZI?

Personal logo Doms Decals Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Aug 2015 4:17 p.m. PST

No it's definitely on the chassis – I'm guessing spot welded on as a training vehicle of some sort – I don't see how they could properly fit a turret ring to take it.

Katzbalger06 Aug 2015 4:34 p.m. PST

It could be a field modification to allow the PzI to shoot at enemy tanks--a sort of precursor to the PzJg I?

emckinney06 Aug 2015 4:54 p.m. PST

Makes more sense than taking a T-26 and welding a PzI turret onto it …

thabear06 Aug 2015 5:55 p.m. PST

Totally missed the turret swap but noticed the towed wheel carriage straight away

Strange indeed. A bit off topic but it's not the first picture I've seen of a T-26 turret on another tank.

An R35 isn't the same as a Pz I of course.

T-26 mod. 1933 . That looks like the turret, but what is with the extra wheel behind? Is it an added drive train to support the weight?

what is with the extra wheel behind?

No, Dom's right, it's a 37mm PAK 36, apparently being towed by the PzI/T26 hybrid. You can just make out the distinctive top of the gun shield over its rear fender.

spontoon08 Aug 2015 10:43 a.m. PST

The R-35 with T26 turret was a real prototype done by German and Rumanian engineers in order to try and upgrade Rumania's tank fleet. It proved too expensive and time consuming and they opted for just welding the T-26 mantlet and gun onto the R-35 turret.

I don't see how a T-26 turret could possibly fit onto a PzKpfw.I, unless as a non-rotating jury-rig.

soledad08 Aug 2015 11:21 a.m. PST

If the turret cannot move at all it must be almost impossible to aim. Aiming would have to be done by the driver by moving the tank. But the driver cannot see how the gun is aimed. I would say a almost useless conversion unless used against fixed positions and no threat against the tank itself.

Mike O08 Aug 2015 2:18 p.m. PST

Fascinating photo, Lluis. Made me wonder if these conversions actually saw action or were cobbled together for the parade?

Guess you could say almost the same about all those WW2 jagdpanzers, stugs, su-85s and other self-propelled AT vehicles although they had limited traverse. No idea what system the crews had to use with that limitation. The British Archer SP vehicle had the gun facing backwards so the driver was looking in the opposite direction entirely!

Mark 1 Supporting Member of TMP08 Aug 2015 10:59 p.m. PST

Oh great. Now WoT is probably going to add the T-26 turret and 45mm M32 gun to the research tree for the Pz. 1 and we'll wind up with 50mph speedsters with potent AT firepower running around in every frikkin' battle!

And btw, aiming a gun by turning a vehicle is a LOT different than pointing a gun by turning a vehicle. Yes a StuG or SU-85 driver had to get the gun lined up in the general direction the TC wanted, but that's 5 seconds of work. Getting on gun actually layed on to a target, with 2 or 3m circle-of-error accuracy at 500 or 750m, by using clutch and brake steering? No thank you! You'll spend half an hour trying to do that even IF you have a gunsite on your driver's scope.

Agreed; Assault guns do have some gun traverse. I'm not sure a tracked vehicle can have that fine a handling "2 cm left"

Personal logo Doms Decals Sponsoring Member of TMP09 Aug 2015 3:13 a.m. PST

That's why I suggested training vehicle earlier – SPATs aimed solely by vehicle traverse have been tried a few times (anyone for the Jagdchieftain?), and invariably failed even with far more sophisticated steering than a Panzer I driver could dream of – you absolutely need at least a few degrees of traverse for aiming. The only reason I can think of for fitting it is troop familiarisation – sticking the T-26 turret on gives an "enemy" silhouette – kind of like the NTC's fake BMPs and suchlike.

mkenny09 Aug 2015 7:37 a.m. PST

There is a turretless T-26 directly to the front. The'photo' wraps around the back of the book and it just so happens that the T-26 hull is on the corner and would be only half in view when you look at the cover. Given the tonal contrast between the T-26 turret and the following Pz I turrets I suspect an bit on cloning going on. For sure the smoke and fire effect has been added afterwards.
