The movie, Zulu Dawn, shows British lancers being present with Chelmsford's column in the scenes where they are crossing Rorke's Drift into Zululand. However, I can't find any reference to a specific UNIT of lancers being present, although certain individuals from lancer regiments, including Chelmsford himself, were there. Can anyone tell me whether there were any British or Natal lancer regiments with Chelmsford's army and, if so, which ones? Thanks.

The 17th lancers and 1st dragoon guards were sent out after Isandlewana. The only mounted troops he had earlier were local militias and some mounted infantry.

There were no British regular cavalry units with the first invasion, the only "regular" Natal force would have been the Natal Mounted Police and they did not carry lances. No one did in the first invasion.

There are some pitfalls with using movies as your reference material but…..

I made a unit of lancers for my Zulu Wars Isandlwana force.

Mounted men at Islandwana:

Imperial Mounted infantry =31 (21 killed)
Natal Mounted Police = 34 (25 killed)
Natal Carbineers = 29 (22 killed)
Newcastle Mounted rifles = 14 (7 killed)
Buffalo Border Guard = 8 (3 killed)

One of the survivors was a captain Gardner of the 14th Hussars who was serving on the staff of Colonel Glynn.
There was also a naval rating in there somewhere.

I'm pretty sure the Lancers were included in Zulu Dawn as visual eye-candy for the audience of non-wargamers.
AND just to confuse gamers as a bonus.
