I'm not really a 'Western man' but I'd like to know something in more detail about Grant's campaign and the siege of Vicksburg in particular.

Any suggestions on what to read?

Hello,

One I could recommend is

Ninety-Eight Days: A Geographer's View of the Vicksburg Campaign by Warren E. Grabau,University of Tennessee Press, 2000.

This is a detailed study by a geographer so it has numerous maps in multiple scales as well as orders of battle. There is a special emphasis on the interplay between the geography of the area and the logistical capabilities/limitations of the opposing forces. The focus is on the final campaign and siege with detailed looks at the field engagements of the campaign (Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill etc). Readers looking for details on the naval actions against Vicksburg will be disappointed, with the earlier naval attacks and expeditions into the bayous around the Yazoo mentioned, but not covered in any detail.

Ninety-Eight Days is a great detailed read. A smaller overview but well written book is Jim Arnold's "Grant Wins the War".

Also, if you want extreme detail pulling everything together in the theater Consider Bearss's 3 volume set on the topic.

I second Arnold's "Grant Wins the War". As we've come to expect, well written and entertaining. An unfortunate title for those raised below the Mason-Dixon. :)

Agree with BTC Terrainman… Bears's 3 Volumes are a masterpiece! But expensive!
