I suspect most Iranian armor was leftovers from the Shah's army, which was US gear. That's what their air force was. All such gear had to be cannibalized for spare parts because we wouldn't sell them any. I think they had to buy ammo on the black market since legit arms dealers where selling to Saddam. I suppose they made their own small arms ammo. Anyone make teenage boys in headbands to clear minefields? |

Anthony COrdesman wrote a lenghty book on the war, The Lessons of Modern War Volume II The Iran-Iraq War. You can get a pdf of the chapter on the land portion at: link
It gives a pretty good description of who had what and roughly when. It does not get too far down into the TO&E weeds. |

A friend and I did it in 20mm using a mixture of '70s Americans and Afghanis for the Iranians. |

Iran had Brit "Chieftain" tanks and used German G-3 rifles. |

And later Chinese T-59 tanks and AKs |

Given the wide-spread use of chemical weapons, you'll want troops in gas masks, which can be hard to find. |

I've been gaming it for 20 years using Micro Armor…1 model equals 1 Battalion. 1"=1km. Very interesting period. Cordesman's book is a must. Where else do you get to use Brown and Tan Camo F-14s as Air Superiority Fighters and mini-AWACS platforms? Great variety of weapons, particularly on the Iraqi side: Brazilian, Chinese, North Korean, Soviet, French stuff. |

Micro armor is probably the way forward for this, though I can see why you'd want to do some in 15mm as well. |

Though the book covers a large span of time, 'Iran at War' has an excellent section about the Iran-Iraq war. link -Kosta |

Take a look over on the Guild forum. A few of the guys there do the Iran Iraq war in 20mm. |

Think US for the Iranian and WARPAC for the Iraqis. I ran some games with "Cold War Commander" link . The included army lists are very detailed for this conflict. Kind regards, Benoit |

GHQ has a pretty good army lists on their website. Designed for their micro-armour rules, but with plenty of information for any scale except maybe skirmish. link I did this war in 6mm scale with Fistfull of Tows. |

Don't miss the air war, and/or the war on the tankers. Lots of great air battles and skirmishes to keep you busy for decades, I suspect, if you choose to do some of them. For that, I'd go with either 1/300th, or 1/600th scale minis, and probably AirWar C21 rules. Of course, Clash of Sabres is excellent too, if you want smaller, more detailed aerial engagements. |

There are quite a few options out there for 15mm. Battlefront's Fate of a Nation Egyptians and some Israeli vehicles. Command Decision (available from Old Glory 25s) has some modern options. Peter Pig AK-47 line (available from Brookhurst hobbies) is good option for irregular infantry. Finally QRF (Quick Reaction Force), see TSS (Total System Scenic) website, also has a good selection of modern equipment. Good luck |
