I'm looking to do some fantasy skirmish gaming. I have looked at Song of Blades and Heroes, and it's expansions, Frostgrave, and the forthcoming Fantasy Rampant!. A game that is not tied to specific mini's, or a particular world, and that has a long-term progression for the warbands would be ideal. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas they could share? Thanks in advance, Eric

Brink of Battle with it's fantasy supplement Epic Heroes can make things as simple or as complicated as you like, up to 20 modrls per side. |

I'll reccomend PULP ALLEY. The rules are mainly for "pulp era", BUT the rules are VERY EASILY adapted to ANY setting you may imagine. Plus, there is a "free starter" for download, so you can see if the rules are for you, before buying the complete book. Here at TMP and at LAF there are multiple AARs with PA used for alternative settings, including fantasy. Hope that helps. |

BattleSystem Skirmish, though long OOP. It is based on 2nd Ed. AD&D, complete with XP awards for monsters/opponents killed. It is actually a hybrid game, relying on the RPG for its advancement. It is a predecessor of 4th Ed. D&D, complete with a thin veneer of RPG on the top of it, though it is clearly a mini's game, first and foremost. Copies can be picked up from e-Bay, as well as used book sellers, including Amazon.com. Cheers! |

Use the rules for mordheim and make up stats for the stuff you want. You can find the rules for free online easily enough. If you cant shoot me a PM. |

Eric, I can demo both song of blades and heroes and lion rampant next time we game together. Open combat is another newish fantasy skirmish game that has been well received. Episode 141 of the Meeples and Miniatures podcast had a very good review of it meeplesandminiatures.co.uk None of those really have war band progession. There's of course mordheim. Which has been reworked by the fan community to clean it up and is now called Coreheim. But it's still tied to the warhammer world which can be adjusted of course. coreheim.com |

I would also recommend Two Hour Wargames Warrior Hero Legends. Game play is open ended so each game creates a narrative that you can keep adding to. If you combine several rules books, the world you play in can be pretty huge. For example, I've combined 4 THW rule books for my current campaign, WHL for wilderness play, 2 Hour Dungeon Crawl for the dungeons, New Market Round for the towns, and Larger Than Life for the quests. I also created my own custom map. It's a true solo rpg. |

I a big fan of the SoB&H system. It does, by the way, have a smallish element of warband progression in the base game, and this is expanded in Song of Deeds and Glory. The only down side of the system is that it's like eating potato chips – you end up wanting (or needing, if they have that particular added thing you need for your game) all of the expansions. Since they're only $8 USD a piece, this is not a terrible thing, really. Doug |

In all honesty I'll recommend GW's Lord of the Rings: The rules are clean, the gameplay is tense, and heroes are nether army-slaughtering supermen or walking die roll modifiers… |

There's a new edition of SoB&H coming out in a while, with advanced options for more customization/detail too. Not sure if it'll have more detailed magic (like the Ganesha Games RPG), as that seems to be one thing that separates Frostgrave from it. |

I 2nd using "Mordheim" for combat & campaign progression with the figures & the setting or your choice. I've played the game itself & I've also used the combat rules for Shakespearian skirmish, Border Reivers, Pirates & Barsoom. |

There's a new edition of SoB&H coming out in a while, with advanced options for more customization/detail too. Some (but probably not all) of this stuff turned up in Fightin' Fungi, the recent release. Doug |

Song of blades and GW Lord of the rings are both very good . If your request for long-term progression for the warbands is very important then the mordheim suggestions are probably the way to go. |

I have a fantasy system that might suit your needs – Iron & Honor: link Of course, not sure if it meets your needs, but it is not specific to any miniatures and it is completely setting neutral. Unfortunately, there isn't a campaign or experience system in place, but that is being worked on. You can also see a preview of some of it at Wargames vault: link |
