I am collecting an Austrian 18mm SYW army and am struggling to find any 18mm Horse Grenadiers or Carabiniers….. I am thinking of cutting the heads off the Austrian dragoons and replacing them Grenadiers heads. However, what to do about the Carabiniers? The Carabiniers are supposedly different from Cuirassier by their carbine and a saber instead of the heavier straight sword (palasch I think)….that is next to impossible to model as most swords are pretty much attached to the body, at least the scabbard is. Also, I think the Eureka and blue moon models both have the carbine but straight sword, that might be the answer. (I got my info at Kronoskaf site, cheers to that man!) Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations? |

Freikorps does these I believe. Also in the Old Glory 15mm Austrian dragoon pack there used to be 6 Horse Grenadiers in every bag of 30, but 19th Cent Minis has repacked them so I don't know the mix anymore. |

I sort of remember my old glory 15 Austrian dragoons have 1/5 horse grenadiers. As said before, old delivery. For the carabiniers all that could be done was squeeze a bit to curve the sabers which of course do not fit the scabbards but then… |

The carabinier wore black infantry gaiters rather than boots, so this is fairly easy to do with a file and a bit of painting. The sword is harder, but even in 28mm it is a hardly noticeable distinction. Head gear is the same. I was planning on some of my own until the minimal difference became evident. I decided to do another unit of horse grenadiers to do 'elite squadrons' instead. Horse grenadiers are best bought than converted, especially at that scale. They are not perceptibly, excepting head gear, different from dragoons otherwise. But, at least having bear skins will make the unit stand out as 'elite', plus, they can double up as representing the unit of dragoons they are from. This is the first unit of them I did – from dragoon regiment Kolowrat

Wot Jcfrog said. I used the OG figures with no problem – in fact, you always got proportionately too many horse grenadiers in the Austrian dragoon pack, so I used the spares to make Wuerttemberg dragoons (iirc?) who wore bearskin. |
