In ancient Rome, no sport was more popular that chariot racing. Which do you prefer on the tabletop: chariot racing or gladiatorial combats? |

Gladiator combat. Incidentally, Two Hour Wargames' "Heroes of the Colosseum" has rules for both gladiator combat AND chariot racing all in one box: link |

I wrote a chariot racing game, made the board complete with spectators and 6 sets of chariots, crashed chariots and loose horses about 30 years ago. It was a one-off for Claymore, Scotlands Premier Wargames Show. It ran for years and years and years, always brought back by popular demand. I think the chariots were replaced more than once due to wear and tear. I made an air mobile version of the board so that we could take it abroad, Delft and Prague if I remember correctly. In fact, at one time it won second prize at two different shows on the same day as we had two copies, one went to Delft for Murphys Heroes and the other to a show in England somewhere (probably Phalanx). I even had the rules translated into Dutch. So, for me, Gladiators :) |

Chariots. Individual hand to hand combat is a different flow of action and decision making. I think chariots fit better with a turn based tabletop system. |

Gladiators … a bit more content than chariot racing (though I'm sure there is more to come from the latter) … Did your chariot game get published anywhere, JimDuncanUK? I'd be interested in seeing a copy or the rules if you have a link or similar … Phil Ancients on the Move |

Phil I'll need to rummage through the archives but I must have a copy somewhere and maybe some pictures of the game in action. Jim jimduncan779 AT btinternet DOT com |

Chariots for me. Here's a review of our version. YouTube link It's a bit different as the chariots don't run around a track and get spread out. Instead, they stay in a pack and the pack moves around the track. |

Gladiators, because I don't have room for a circus or the time to build one. One of these days … Doug |

JJ good point. I'm working on a 2x2 chariot track for Charioteer to use with my 15mm chariots. Doesn't need squares or lanes so should be pretty easy to do. I'll try and post pics when (if) it gets finished. |

Galdiators but would not turn down chariots if I had the game space. I fondly remember playing Circus Maximus as a board game with counters. I was always lucky taking the turns at high speed without wrecking my chariot. There was an alternative set of game rules by GW for using Warhammer Fantasy Chariots in games. One of our local guys actually scratch built a track and hosted a few games. Of course players brought their particular armies' chariots. |

Chariot racing. It inspired my Pod racing rules. See runtus.org for Spin Out rules. |

Both. My 6mm chariot track is only 2'x1', so it doesn't take up muck space. |
