The Russian defence ministry has grounded its fleet of Mi-28 attack helicopters after a fatal accident at an air show on Sunday.

One pilot died and another jumped clear as the helicopter crashed during an aerobatic display by the elite Berkut squadron in the Ryazan region, about 170km (105 miles) south-east of Moscow.

The Russian military has blamed the crash on a hydraulics failure. There have been six other Russian air force crashes in recent weeks.

A shame about the pilot.

How exactly does one jump clear of a crashing helo?

Very carefully (and yet quickly) I would think.

It is possible to jump clear of your helo, but hitting the ground is still going to leave a nasty mark!

I notice the Russians didn't exactly say that the co-pilot is uninjured.

This news report is further indication that the Russians are wearing-out what's left of their air force. They aren't really in a position to replace their hardware.

RIP

They are literally running their Air Force into the ground…

I have read news agency reports that actually say that the co-pilot ejected from the chopper. I am not aware, that the Mi-28 was fitted with ejector seats and nothing can be seen on the photos, so I would put that down to reporters not knowing much about military technology.

Just watched a video of the crash… no ejector seat… the co-pilot is just getting off after the dust has settled from the crash.

Watched video, they went down "quite well" in autorotation except the ground was not good. One crew went put a bit dazzled.

Ejector seats: "In the Mi-28's case the cockpit doors are blown off, the stub wings are jettisoned and air bladders are inflated below the door frames just prior to ejection to make sure the crew are directed away from the helicopter." link
