The IS-2 is one of my favorite tanks. I have done a fair bit of research for my own projects, and I haven't seen a photo that would match the color drawing. Looks pretty generic to me, something that particular artist has done before instead of depicting an actual unit's vehicle. But for arguments sake it would be from the n-th Guards Breakthrough Heavy Tank Regiment. The tank numbering system varied a great deal between units so "45" is fine (say 5th vehicle of the 4th company in this case). [21 tanks per regiment, in 2 battalions of 10 tanks; each battalion divided into two companies of 5] |

Tim Soviet heavy tanks were organized as 2 tanks per ptn, 2 ptns plus 1 command tank per cpy, 4 cpys plus command tank per regt, and later 3 regts plus 2 command tanks per bgde. Respective totals 5 – 21 – 65 tanks. |

Great information! I did find a good drawing, based on a photo, of an IS-2 to use in a game on the Battle for Berlin. It is from the 88th Guards Heavy Tank Regiment, 3rd Shock Army, 1st Byelorussian front. Very simple 2 digit number, in this case a "22" (2nd vehicle 2nd Company?). In addition has the white identification band around the turret and the white cross for air recognition on the top of the turret. As always am indebted to my fellow TMPers, thank you. |
