Can anyone recommend a nice, but affordable desert map? Looking for mats that are gritty to the touch…like their flocked.

Thanks

They are quite easy to make.

You need acrylic mastic (bathroom sealant) which you spread over your cloth. Then sprinkle sand on it and when it is dry paint the whole thing with acrylic paint to match your bases.

There are several tutorials on-line

Yea, I was thinking of going to a local fabric store and picking something up and then spraying a textured sand colored paint on it

tan/khaki felt
couple of shades of brown and grey spray paint

Spread out the cloth, spray spots/streams of color from 2-3 feet away. Continue until satisfied (experiment on an old sheet or newsprint)

Woodland Scenics makes a desert mat in four different sizes.

Woodland Scenics desert mat. I have this and used it about 3 times before I give up and moved to a fabric mat. I had to roll the mat for easy transport after each use. Loads of sand came off easily and I had to continually brush the sand from the bottom of my figures before storage and transport -- magnet to steel surfaces. Very annoying!
