"U.S. and international security experts have expressed concerns that it may just be a matter of time before China establishes an air defense identification zone over disputed waters in the South China Sea. China has been rapidly reclaiming land and making artificial islands in the South China Sea during the past year, causing strong reaction in the U.S. and many other countries. Senator John McCain, chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, said island building is just the beginning…" Full article here link And… by the way… China fills South China Sea with over 100 ships for live-fire military drills link Amicalement Armand |

Noticed a lot more military aircraft overhead in the early part of the week – so that is perhaps why. This China thing is an issue but is often overblown too. It's not the only thing that gets overblown for political gain. |

The Chinese will declare a new or expanded ADIZ and about 72 hours later a flight of B52s will pass through the area, ignoring the Chinese. |

I took a look at the map and that island they built is very far from adequate support. It almost looks like the center of a target, surrounded by potentially hostile states who have all the advantages of fighting in their own back yard. All China has is a lot of manpower to lose, although that ends when they run out of ships. They are going to be hated more intensely than even the Japanese. |

That is a scarey scenario, it has been in development for some time, several years. The Philippine military ground a WW2 LST? on a reef, keeping about a dozen soldier on it for a time (months?) until replacements arrive. There is more sea borne traffic through that area of the world than the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal. One thing that may evolve is with China establishing small bases/landing strips is in better position to discuss the future. Some of the countries will need to work together to counter the Chinese land/sea grab. Is a joint development company in the works? IMO, it should happen. Probably won't happen for years, maybe over a decade and a few people have lost their lives. That is my brief prediction. |

It is a big deal, but hopefully we will just ignore it. If they create an incident, we should remove their man-made islands in short order, since their claims are ridiculous. |

How would you suggest they be removed? Bombing? The only long term strategy to counter China is economic. Their power is economic – not military. The support of the Chinese people is founded on economic growth – unsustainable economic growth at that. When the US and EU finally get around to revitalizing their domestic manufacturing base China will no longer be able to compete globally and will have to 'play nicer' with its neighbours. War is not an option – but a worst case scenario. The infamous TPP is part of a master plan to encircle China but will seriously alienate US allies in the region, including Japan and South Korea who are key. It's a bad strategy. |
