What colour was the Hospitallers flag at that time ? Black with white cross or red with white cross ? I know they still wore the black "cappa clausa" at that time. And where can I find 28mm flags for this ?

Can't really answer your main question, but here is one source for 28mm flags (and shield decals as well):

At that time, the Templars flag was black and white, so I doubt the Hospitallers wanted to be confused with their rivals. I'm quite sure it was red.

I think the earliest representation is 13th century (Matthew Paris) by which point it was red. It may have been so from the start.

The militarization of the Hospitallers was slow. Mostly it was in emulation of the Templars. There wasn't a uniform look beyond the black cappa clausa, which turned into a black surcoat a few years before the order adopted the red surcoat and white cross on the breast. Their banner was most likely the very same, years before that, which led naturally to the red and white surcoat. As far as I know, there is a lack of positive evidence for any dating of the banner….

yorkie o1!

I have been painting some legio heroica crusaders these past days. And used your brilliant figures as inspiration!

Poor imitations… tho

OK, so red with white cross it is. Many thanks for the info.

Yes, this is the right way to go for the Third Crusade era, if not earlier. I'm away from my sources, but I did research it quite carefully a couple of years ago wink

It's nice to have TMP to get these things in order. Thank you all very much….
