Okay having a discussion with some folks, and we were discussing pirate treasure, and the question came up, so I thought I would ask everyone here on TMP.

"When you think of Pirates, and think of "Pirate Treasure", which monetary term do you think of?

A: Doubloons

B: Pieces of Eight"

Please pick only one of the two…and please do not add anymore ideas.

Thanks!

A. Doubloons. Even my wife gave that as a quick answer. And my daughter agreed, so case closed. :-)

"SQUAWK! PIECES OF EIGHT! PIECES OF EIGHT!"

But Cap'n Flint also takes doubloons.

So, both. evil grin

(And we clearly need a *pirate* icon. And a *Jolly Roger* icon.)

Spanish Doubloons were gold. Pieces of Eight were silver. I think of gold when I think of pirate treasure, so Doubloon.

Bitcoins.

The local party shop sells plastic coins that are "gold" plated, so . . .

A. Doubloons

Although I have a piece of eight, I still think of doubloons

What! No grog and Gold!

zippyfusenet28 Jul 2015 6:57 p.m. PST

A piece of eight is small change, a silver dollar chopped into eight bits. A bit is only 12.5 cents, two bits is a silver quarter. A chest full of pieces of eight…might be enough money to buy a small farm.

Gold is real money. Doubloons, guineas, louis d'or. Gold is the loot that would tempt a man to turn pirate.

They said we'd cruise for American gold,
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears,
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
I'm the last of Barrett's Privateers!

A piece of eight was a Spanish dollar worth 8 reales.
