I read on the HMGS website that it is 16 – 20 Mar 16 but… that is later than normal. Is that solid? |

I have missed a Cold Wars in the past due to a St Patrick's Day blizzard, so that looks right. |
demiurgex | 28 Jul 2015 11:27 a.m. PST |
Yep, Cold Wars can be a bit of a gamble. Personally I'd love to see them move Cold Wars to VA, move Historicon to PA, and Fall-In to NY. Wonder if there's any good facilities in the Poconos region. That would be a delightful time to be there. Or maybe even toward the border with Vermont – I'd love to get a chance to get over to Saratoga. |

I like your ideas demiurgex. That would give me a greater chance of getting to 2 and once in a while 3 of the cons, not just H-Con…which is currently a 12 hour drive. PA would only be a 9 hour drive and NY, depending on where is then reasonable. |
JohnnyPainter | 28 Jul 2015 12:30 p.m. PST |
I'd like Fall-In or Cold Wars in VA too. I'm not made for the heat, I'm like 70% butter. |

"Wonder if there's any good facilities in the Poconos region. That would be a delightful time to be there." Hey, John the OFM: that's near your stompin' grounds. Any input from the boots on the ground? |

I am worried a weekend of snow in NOVA and the mid-atlantic region would kill a Cold Wars in Virginia. The roads plowing and clearing is much slower in Virginia. I cannot imagine this show not being in PA were folks are more used to driving in the snow……………..Not sure if moving Cold Wars is a good idea. It may kill the show………..But then again 2 HMGS shows may not be a bad idea. |

I think two HMGS shows would be a bad idea. I love all three. I drive from Dayton Ohio to get to them. No complaints. But early March in Pennsylvania made no sense to me. (NOVA wouldn't either, of course.)I left a day early this year to get between two storms on my route. The 2016 dates are much better. Tom |
demiurgex | 28 Jul 2015 6:03 p.m. PST |
MUUUCH less chance of having snow in VA in late march than in PA…. Little search – average chance of light snow in Fredricksburg in March 15th-31st, 1.5%. link |

I live about 20 -25 miles north of The Host in Lancaster. The PA Turnpike is between me and Lancaster, running east – west. Weather forecasts often involve the turnpike as the dividing line for snow vs sleet/rain. Snow is not the only late winter/early spring gift from mother nature. |
Tumbleweed | 28 Jul 2015 7:50 p.m. PST |
Ironically, some of our worst snowstorms here in Virginia have come up from the South and holding Cold Wars here would not guarantee good weather. Keep Cold Wars in Lancaster where it belongs. |
Flak Bait | 29 Jul 2015 6:54 a.m. PST |
Snow in Virginia is a crap shoot. You can get it and get it good or not. Last year was above average. My problem driving up last year was not so much snow as it was the snow plow driver in Maryland that had his bed up then hitting a bridge over pass closing down 3 lanes. |
capncarp | 29 Jul 2015 8:11 a.m. PST |
To be fair, last Cold Wars' storm was a sudden-onset heavy-depositing one that dumped a lot of snow over the area in a very short time. I was surprised that the Host got its lot as clear as they did in the time permitted. And the routes were fairly clear, the surfaces fairly "dry", allowing for the amount of time that PennDOT had to work on the volume. As to the worst storms for this area (I live near Harrisburg), they result from very moist storms sliding up the coast then dumping their content as snow when they hit colder air (eastern edge of the Appalachian Mts/Blue Ridge). Pennsylvanians can echo the Starks--"Winter is Coming". |

How about the date? Anyone know? |
Moe the Great | 29 Jul 2015 9:14 a.m. PST |
Chance of Snow in VA at that time, low. Chance of bumper to bumper traffic, 100%. |
dapeters | 29 Jul 2015 9:46 a.m. PST |
Please correct me if I am wrong but didn't Virginia get hit by the storm in March? |
historygamer | 29 Jul 2015 10:19 a.m. PST |
CW dates have floated throughout its history. In many years past it was sometimes held in early April, depending on the Easter holiday date. I am sure that date is correct, as the following weekend is Easter. |
d effinger | 29 Jul 2015 6:48 p.m. PST |
I had heard (but have not seen it in print) that it was the normal first weekend of March. Anyone know the truth? They MUST have the date booked already so…. when? Don |
McKinstry | 29 Jul 2015 7:35 p.m. PST |
I cannot think of the last Cold Wars I missed and over the last 10+ years I believe we have had two storms which is one more than Fall In over that period unless you want to count the Saturday night wind blackout. I am pleased to see a return to the middle/end of the month as it certainly helps the odds plus St. Patrick's day in the Host bar is fun. |
Bobgnar | 29 Jul 2015 7:48 p.m. PST |
Doesn't seem to be late enough in March to be sure to miss bad weather but it's better than early March. I have attended three Cold wars that have fallen on St. Patrick's Day or close to it yet there has never been an Irish theme weekend.. Does anyone know yet whether we can have Confederate troops with confederate flags showing? |
Grimmnar | 29 Jul 2015 8:04 p.m. PST |
Avidgamer, you might wanna recheck. I just looked at the HMGS site and it shows different dates for Cold Wars 2016. I rechecked because the dates you listed was for too many days. It shows….. Cold Wars 2016 March 3 – 6 Lancaster Host Resort & Conference Center Lancaster, PA But Cold Wars has been in Apr in the past. Grimm |
Ember52 | 29 Jul 2015 9:43 p.m. PST |
In 2017, it looks like Cold Wars moves later in March to 3/16-3/19/17. Scott |
Garryowen | 30 Jul 2015 6:13 a.m. PST |
Well, The Host is making Cold Wars reservations for March 16-20, 2016. I realize the HMGS website for Cold Wars 2015 has a notice that the dates are Mar 3-6 for 2016. I don't believe it. The site for members (one of which I am, but cannot find the site right now…I have to go cut the grass) had a posting some time back that the March 16-20 2016 was incorrect and it should have said March 17-20 2016. Was originally posted as one day too long as mentioned above. Tom |
WaltOHara | 30 Jul 2015 6:34 a.m. PST |
Man, I wouldn't kick if we had Fall In or Cold Wars in Ocean City, MD or somewhere near taking advantage of Off-Season rates. And no, I wouldn't complain if H'con moved north.. it's amazing how less humid it can get form a couple of states distance. W. |
avidgamer | 30 Jul 2015 9:13 a.m. PST |
So… it's 17-20 2016 then? How come there is no posting when the date is EXACTLY on the HMGS website?! (rhetorical question) It's absurd that they can't post it correctly. |
Ember52 | 30 Jul 2015 10:27 a.m. PST |
Tom, You may be right about CW'16 dates. I was just going by the listing in the Conventions section of the HMGS website. Scott

vonLoudon | 30 Jul 2015 6:27 p.m. PST |
There is already Williamsburg Muster in February which is a very nice fun local convention in Williamsburg. Remember when Fall In or Cold Wars move they can kill local cons by being too close to the dates of local cons. Just ask NOVAG. |
