Am I correct in assuming they were largely cheap & little used decorations?

I certainly haven't any figures using them & can't find any period illustrations with swords in action but where troops in melee seem to prefer the clubbed musket.

See a lot of pike with sword drawn and pikes butted by the foot to repel horse charges ochoin, but agree clubbed musket seems to be weapon of choice for close in combat , the only swordsmen were the sword and buckler men earlier in the war withe the Spanish being the dominate users of this troop type. I'm planing to do my armies for Piquet riles but want some flexibility for other rules (remember 'To the Banner'?) What's your view on basing ?
Cheers

I think its important to remember that men had to be taught how to use a sword and that it was not a quick study. Most infantry men they did not have that skill but a sword could still be useful and sword bearing implied status. The preference for the clubbed musket reflects that reality.

Zargon you can use any base size for Piquet so it can be whatever you fancy.

Jules: basing is the only barrier to universal happiness.

As I use FoG, every base is 60mms wide. Lucky I like FoG because I'd probably have to rebase for any other set of rules.

LoL ochoin know what you mean, OB thanks, yes I was going 60 mm wide myself, the depth thing is no problem I think, and there's just enough space to pretty up the bases too.
Cheers thanks fellas
