Anyone know of a unit like this? Dark blue like a Federal unit. Thanks for any help.

Doc Ord26 Jul 2015 4:34 p.m. PST

There was dark blue gray which could look blue.

Zargon26 Jul 2015 5:11 p.m. PST

Every time they won, which was often:) actually from my understanding Sham a lot of earlier war Confederate units did indeed use dark blue kepies, if you need specifics I will look up for you (Bull Run article I have in my ACW scrap book) of course as the war carried on this uniformity was not maintained.
Cheers hope this helps.

What brings this question up? There are several possible answers. Have you come across a reference to a particular CSA unit that supposedly wore blue kepis?

NY Irish26 Jul 2015 5:35 p.m. PST

No I have not.

I think that the official uniform of the CSA Marine Corps had dark blue kepis.

The Confederate Navy used dark blue caps for enlisted men.

Can I still type "Confederate" or has that been ruled a "hate speech" word?

Greylegion26 Jul 2015 8:09 p.m. PST

I think you're still good Oddball.

I think the official CSA uniform called for a yellow kepi for the cavalry, red kepi for the artillery and a lt blue kepi for the infantry.

According to Haythornthwaite

There's your problem right there.

LtJBsz has part of your answer, though the number of units in the regulation uniform should be small. Otherwise I would go with cadet gray or gray with a blue band.

The coats and caps produced in Richmond in 1864 used a very dark grey wool which often looked dark blue

Plus as noted there were a few units who had dark blue kepis

The official regs were as noted – grey kepis with light blue bands for infantry, red for gunners and yellow for cavalry – except for some of the gunners, not often seen

Thanks all

The only unit I can think of was the VMI cadets that had a dark blue forage cap rather than a kepi. they fought at New Market in them

Wizard Whateley27 Jul 2015 2:17 p.m. PST

I was just going to mention VMI cadets.

NY Irish27 Jul 2015 6:22 p.m. PST

Ah ha! VMI!

HammerHead28 Jul 2015 10:08 a.m. PST

….also if you search in the tmp discussion section `Cadets in the fray` it has very fine information on the unit, battle and flag.

Just a note; not all CS Marines wore dark blue Kepis. There is a CS Marine kepi that has a blue band and blue top on a grey kepi. Having said that, there is not enough evidence to go either way on CS Marines so you could do either.
