With the 100th Anniversary coming I wanted to know if there are any rules that can handle Jutland in an afternoon game. Some caveats Only interested in commercially released rules, not home brew Willing and expect to see some abstraction, simple gunnery and torpedo tables, destroyer flotillas versus all individual ships, etc.. Experience or best guess on how long it takes to fight the battle I have played different rule sets and most struggle along at this scale. |

Dreadnought by Ben King. I have a PC program that will do the shooting and damage tracking for you too. Mark@scalecreep.com |

Have you looked into getting a second-hand copy of Avalon Hill's Jutland game? Comes with a hex map of the North Sea for both sides to plot their moves, and has all the abstractions you asked for. Light cruisers and destroyers are represented as flotillas on a single playing piece. The focus of the game is finding the enemy fleet and then grand squadron and fleet manuvering on the tabletop. |

Second Jutland by AH. Third it, actually. |

Another vote for TAHGC's original Jutland game. We've used them with 1:6000 scale ships glued directly on the appropriate counters. Games were normally finished in 3-4 hours. link link Jim P.S. Thanks – I've suggested to our game schedule keeper that we run one again on June 4, 2016. |

One more vote for AH Jutland. And if you don't like the tactical rules, use General Quarters II. |

A couple more suggestions: If you just want to fight the actual battle as it occurred, on a table with miniatures, you could use General Quarters 2, using 1/6000 scale miniatures, DD flotillas (optional rule), and experienced players. The game was clearly written with this in mind. Caveat: GQ2 is long out of print and might be hard to find. Another board game option is the Avalanche Press game Jutland in the Great War at Sea series. Each fleet starts in port and players plot map moves until encounters occur, at which point you set up the tactical battles. You can either use ship miniatures to play out the tactical rules or substitute a miniatures game to fight tactical battles. This is probably the most streamlined board game for simulating the fog of war that hung over the entire event, with the drawback that you might play for a couple hours without the fleets sighting each other. - Ix |

A&A Games has Sea Wars Fleet Actions – link and Naval Thunder might do it too – link The Ben King rules are pretty slick too. |

I've done it twice with GQ2, worked very well. I was tempted to suggest DBSA by Phil Barker but they are a free download rather than commercial, so probably fall into your "homebrew" classification |

Another vote for GQ2, wonderfully fun rules that donīt get bogged down. |

Thanks. Naval Thunder and Avalon Hil Jutland seem good. DBSA is not commercial but sounds interesting. However it says for pretreat only. I would think dreads are a different animal, especially if both are in the game. |

Forgot to mention. Has anyone added ships or supplements to AH Jutland so you could do other dreadnought fleet actions? Anywhere to get them? |

Noting the continuing enthusiasm for GQ2, what are the chances of persuading Mr Navwar to reprint them? There seems to be a fair bit of potential interest. |

Dantheman: Their are tons of them out there. Go to Board Game Greek and you can find them there. When I was a kid I handrew and rated every major ship until about 1930. Otherwise, you can go to ahgeneral.org and most of those issues are avaviable as pdfs. Still BGG will give you a list to use to make it quicker |

Need help:) I want to surprise my club with several Jutland games next year. Since it is a surprise I won't be able to play test much and I have a question about the Avalon Hill Jutland rules. I have a 1967 copy. On Boardgame Geek someone suggested the 1985 reprint had several rule modifications that made the game even better. Is this true and if yes can anyone share those modifications here for me? Any help would be great:) |

If I were to attempt Jutland I'd use Avalanche Press' game: link I've only tried a couple of the smaller scenarios, but was lots of fun and very easy to play. |

Old thread, but I just bought mine. Looking forward to some WW1 ship-on-ship action. Oh dear, there is something wrong with our bloody ships today! |

If you are going to Historicon and are interested in WWI Dreadnought Battleships, I will be putting on my "Age of Dreadnoughts" game that I did at Cold Wars 2023. This is a 1/6000 scale game and players will command squadrons of Dreadnoughts in this fast pace game using "Fighting Battleships" rules, inspired by Avalon Hill's Jutland game. The game was well received at Cold Wars and won a PELA award. Thanks Kim

Can I get a copy of the Fighting Battleship rules? Our gaming group really likes the AH Jutland game but would like a bit more detail (not much). Thanks. |
